UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. MAY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
APl-'iOVlD MATERIAL FOR ROOFINQ, TUBING, TANKS, WAINSCOTINQ BOATS, AND OTHER STRUCTURES.
Specification forming part of `Letters'Patent No. 51,735, dated December 26, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, J onN K. MAYO, ofPortand, in the county of Cumberland and State f Maine, have invented a new and useful Imrcvement in the Manufacture of Material for es Generally; and I do hereby declare ne following to be a full, clear, and exact descript-ion of the same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a waterpipe constructed according to :my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionof the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation and sectional view of a portion of clapboarding made upon my improved plan. ot' a section of rooting illustrative ot' my invention. Fig. 5 representssimilar views of a portion of the interior lining ot' a house -or' other analogous structure embodying the same principle. Fig. 6 represents a barrel, to which article my invention may also Abe advantageously applied.
The scale used in the ensuing description vconsists of a thin layer ot' wood cut from a board or log and forming a veneer.
Myinvention consists in ceinenting together a number of thesey scales or veneers with the v grain ot' the successive pieces running crosswise or diversely. A number ot' these scale boards, their surfaces having been previously treated with cement or analogous material, areso'laid together as to cross the grain of the respective pieces, so as to form a tirm inaterial for the construction of houses, boats,
ships, tanks, floors, pipes, drains, sewers, packng-cases, boxes, barrels, sidewalks, cans, pails, tubs, rkins, measures, cheese-bones, trunks, valises, dry-docks, canal-locks, mill and factory plumes, masts, spars, outside covering and inside linish of houses, stores, shops, depots, and warehouses, fences, covering of piles, railroad-cars, railroad and suspension bridges,
railroad tracks and sleepers, wagons, carriages,
and carts, bedsteads, sacking, mattresses, and covering of beds, sofas, and sofa-bedsteads, divans, lounges, chairs, and settces. In house- Fig. 4 represents similarviews architecture the weather-boarding and inside iinish of the house may consist of this material, yand in vessels of every kindl it ma-y bemade -the covering or lining of the ribs or skeleton,
or in some instances mayforxn the bodyoi' the article-as, t'or instance, in pipes in which the v layers are united by an impervious cement,
and so applied to each other that the grain of one will be lengthwise of the pipe, ot another will be at right angles to the former,'and, it' others are added, may be spirally around it.
By the well-known processes of wet and dry heating such a. pliability may be given to the `layers as to permit them to readilypassume various figures, or be laid upon-irregular objects with the grain of the respective pieces running 'diversely, so as to prevent splitting.
l cannot pretend to anticipate all the vari` ous uses to which thistscale-board may be applied; 'but suttice i't to say that by the means employed, l am enabled to make a very strong and light structure ot' whatever shape it -may be, or for whatever purpose it may be designed. It isi capable of being made an effective and elegant substitute for the usual covering of the walls ot` rooms. ,For flooring it isalso available, and' especially in cases where it is an object to make apartments airLtight. as in ice-houses, fruit-chambers,l and other rooms which it is desired to isolate for any purpose.
Itis believed that the drawings in connection with the above statement will suice to explain my invention without dwellingfurther upon it. y Y Having thus described myinventiomthe following is what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent: V The application ot' scale-boards or veneers in layers, the direction ot'whose grain is crossed or diversified, and which are connected together, forming a materialfor the construction,A
lining, or covering of land land marine structnres.
JOHN K. MAYO. Witnesses:
