THOMAS VCALVIN COOK, OF CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF FIVE- EIGHTHS TO W. J. MONTGOMERY, J. L. CROWELL, AND JOHN A. KIMMONS,
OF SAME PLACE.
DEvlcE FOR PLAcme TILES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,329, dated March 27, 1894.
Application tiled August l0, 1893- Serial No. 482,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CALVIN COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Cabarrus and State of 5 North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Placing Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for placing ro tiles or linings into wells or excavations, and
o feet b to support the tile by its lower edge.
The arms are separated or held apart by means of a spring c as shown, and are lowered into the well or excavation by means of a rod, chain, or other suspending device d. When z 5 it is desired to place a tile in position, it is placed upon the feet or bent ends b b, as shown in Fig. l, and lowered into the excavation. I then place over the suspending devlce d, a sleeve or collar e which as it de- 3o scends, strikes upon the arms da, and draws or forces them inward toward each other, and
at the same time withdrawing the feet b from beneath the tile and allowing the latter to seat itself. The sleeve c, while of such size as to t freely within the tile, is not large enough 3 5 to pass over the feet b, and hence when the device is raised, the sleeve or collar will also be raised. When raised to the surface, the sleeve is removed, another tile placed upon the feet, and the device again lowered for a repetition of the operations described. While I prefer to employ a spring, it is not necessary, as the resiliency of the arms themselves may be suflicient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isV v In a device for placing tiles &c., the combination with the arms a a bent laterally at their lower ends to form feet b b, and connected at their upper ends; a suspending device; and a removable sleeve or collar adapted to be lowered down upon the arms and force the same toward each other to release the tile, but incapable ofpassing off the lower ends of the arms. 55
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS CALVIN COOK.
