MACHINE FOR IRONING GARMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,328, dated March 27, 1894.

Be it known that I, WOLF CHoEN, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Ironing Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to an improvement in a machine for pressing garments, and consists in the novel arrangement, combination and construction of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the machine mounted on a table, with parts of said. table broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan view more clearly showing how my invention is applied to a sadiron. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section more clearly showing the application of a portion of my invention to a sad iron.

1 indicates the top of a table of ordinary applied ready for operation.

2 indicates a frame which is constructed of two parallel side-bars 3 and 4 and two parallel end-bars 5 and 6. Connected to each corner of this frame are supporting legs 7 which are connected to the top of the table 1 by bolts or screws 8.

9 indicates a standard which is provided with an integral base 10 and the upper end of the standard 9 is provided with a bifurcation 11. Pivotally mounted in this bifurcation and held in position by a pin or bolt 12 is a beam 13 which runs parallel with the bars 3 and 4.

Adjustably mounted on one end of the beam 13 is a weight 14 which is provided with a set screw 15. Pivotally connected to the other end of said beam is a vertical bar 16 which is bifurcated at its lower end and connected to a flat piece of cast or wrought metal 17 which isconstructed with a slot 18 in one end.

Formed on or fixed to the rod 16 are lugs 19 which run at right angles relative to the bars 3 and 4. Formed on the base 10 adjacent the side next the vertical rod 16 is a bifurcated arm 20. Formed on each corner of the SerialNo. 483,084. (No model.)

base 10 and extending downward to a suitable distance are ears 21. Connected to these ears are flanged rollers 22 which are constructed to be mounted on the parallel bars 3 and 4. (See Fig. 1 for illustration.)

23 indicates a sad-iron which is provided with a handle 24 and a handle-support 25. Formed on or fixed to the handle-support 25 adjacent the sad-iron 23 is a collar 26.

27 indicates an ironing-board which is removably located on the top of the table. (See Fig.1 for illustration.)

The operation is as follows: When it is desired to press a garment, the sad-iron 23 being heavier than the weight 14 the sad-iron is raised and the lugs 19 on the rod 16 are made to engage the top of the bifurcated arm 20. By so doing it will suspend the sad-iron a suitable distance above the ironing-board to allow the garment to be placed thereon. When the garment is placed in a suitable position the operator removes the lugs 19 from engagement with the bifurcated arm 20 which will allow the sad-iron to be placed upon the garment. the vertical rod by the handle'support be- .ing slipped into the slot 18 in the piece 17 and held in position by the collar 26. When the sad iron is pressed on the garment and moved longitudinally of said ironing-board the vertical rod 16 being connected to'the beam 13 and the beam 13 connected to the vertical standard 9 and the standard 9 connected to the base and the base with rollers 22 which are constructed to roll on the horizontal bars 3 and 4, it can be readily seen that when the sad-iron is so moved it will allow the support for said iron to move also. The Weight 14 being adjustably mounted on the beam 13 it can be adjusted thereon to balance difierent sizes and weights of sad-irons. The weight is provided with a set-screw so that it can be tightened to the beam after being placed in the proper position.
