SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,269, dated March 2'7, 1894.
Application filed September 25,1893. Serial No. 486,354. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DRAPER, of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
Heretofore the upper bar of the reed has been held in a notch or groove in the hand rail of the lay.
The object of this present invention is to provide holding mechanism for the upper bar or part of the reed in such manner that the top of the reed may be adjusted to straighten the reed and avoid any possibility of the reed deflecting the shuttle from its straight path, or to adjust the reed to any desired angle w1th relation to the race plate of the lay.
Figure 1 in vertical section shows part of a lay with a reed mounted therein in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a partial front view of the lay, and Fig.3 a detail showing one of the halves of the holder for the upper bar of the reed.
In the drawings, A represents the lay beam with its race-plate a, and B the reed, it having usual dents bound into a top bar b, and a bottom bar I), the bottom bar resting in a notch or groove b in the lay beam.
In accordance with my invention the hand rail 0 fastened to the lay sword by a suitable bolt 0 is chambered or cut away as at c to receive a suitable adjustable reed holder D preferably made to embrace the top bar of the reed, said holder being adjustable at right angles to the length of the hand rail by a suitable adjusting device, the adjusting device E herein shown being made as a screw threaded at e to engage a threaded part of the holder, said screw having a suitable annular groove or shoulder to co-operate with a part of the rail and prevent longitudinal movement of the screw, as it will be understood that when the screw is rotated and re strained from longitudinal movement the holder must move. The screw E has a suitable set nut or device 7%. The holder shown is supposed to be of thin, flexible metal extended from near one to the other end of the reed, and in such case only three or four screws such as e willbe needed to adjust the upper end of the reed at right angles to the length of the lay cap to insure a straight line position for the dents.
Believing myself to be the first to confine the upper bar of the reed in a holder so that it may be adjusted to straighten the reed, or for other purposes, this invention is not limited to the particular shape, construction or length of the adjustable holder, as the'same may be of greater or less length and in one or more pieces, the holder, if of several pieces, being provided each section with a proper adjusting device.
It sometimes happens that the hand rail so warps that it is not straight and then the adjusting device enables the reed to be adjusted into proper straight line.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The lay provided with a hand rail, and the reed, combined with an independent holder havinga threaded portion, and a screw 7 5 having threads adapted to engage the threaded portion of said holder, the said screw having a collar to prevent endwise motion thereof while being rotated, the combination being and operating, substantially as described.
2. The lay provided with a hand rail, and the reed, combined with a holder having a threaded portion and a screw having threads adapted to engage the threaded portion of said holder, the said screw having a collar to prevent endwise motion thereof while being rotated, and a suitable nut or device to hold the said screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM F. DRAPER.
