HAND FENCE-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,252, dated March 27, 1894.
Application filed January 6. 1894. Serial No. 495.994.. (No model.) I
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOOH WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central City, in the county of Merrick and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Hand Fence-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand fence machines; and it has for its object to provide IO certain improvements in that class of fence machines which are operated by hand for the purpose of Weaving the pickets between the wires of the fence.
To this end the main and primary objects [5 of the presentinvention are to constructa simple and inexpensive Weaving machine which shall possess efficient means for properly twisting the wires around the pickets, and one which will be held perfectly steady in its up and down movement while in operation.
With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination,
and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a picket fence partly built, and showing my improved weaving machine in operative position for twisting the wires after the insertion of a picket therebetween. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the machine.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
A represents an upright frame or machine bar, constructed of wood or metal, and formed in lengths suitable for different heights of fences, and, at regularly spaced points, the said frame or machine-bar A, is provided with short off-standin g shuttle arms B, to the outer ends of which are pivoted the inner ends of the swinging shuttle bars 0. Any desired number of shuttle arms and shuttle bars pivoted thereto may be arranged on the upright frame bar A, so as to accommodate the machine for use in connection with fences employing difierent numbers of line wires to be weaved around the fence pickets.
The several swinging shuttle bars C, pivoted at their inner ends to the short arms B,
carry at their outer swinging ends the rightangularly disposed wire heads D, which are provided in the opposite extremities thereof, above and below the bars C, with the wire notches E, which are adapted to receive the line wires F, of a fence. 'lheseline wires F,are always arranged in parallel pairs that are intended to accommodate therebetween the fence pickets Gr, of an ordinary picket fence H, and around which fence pickets the pairs of wires are to be twisted or more properly speaking crossed to hold them properly in place. It will be seen that there is a shuttle bar for each pair of fence wires F, and the wire heads D hold the wires of each pair sufficiently far apart so as to accommodate ordinary widths of fence pickets therebetween, and in order to properly twist the wires at one side of the last fence picket placed in position, it
is simply necessary to work the upright frame bar A, up and down, so as to cause the shuttle bars C, to swing or turn on their pivots and thereby twist the wires.
Secured to the upright frame bar A, at a point intermediate of its ends, is a laterally extending combined handle and side brace I, which is angled at its outer end to form a short shuttle arm B, in horizontal alignment with the intermediate one of said shuttle arms, and to the outer extremity of the han- 8o dle shuttle arm B, is pivoted the inner end of the supplemental off-standing shuttle bar C, carrying at its outer end a wire head D, provided with wire notches E, in its ends, similar to the construction of the other shuttle bars and heads. By grasping the handle I, the device may be moved up and down to properlytwist the wires, and by reason of employing an off-standing supplemental shuttle, braced to the frame bar, and connected with an intermediate pair of fence wires, the machine will be steadied in its movement, and will positively be prevented from slipping or working out of a vertical line in which it is necessary to keep the machine moving 5 to efiectually accomplish the proper twisting of the wires.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the principle or [00 sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a wire fence machine, the combination of the upright frame bar having a series of short oifstanding shuttle arms, swinging shuttle bars pivoted at their inner ends to said shuttle arms and having at their outer ends right-angularly disposed wire heads provided with notches in their opposite ends, and a combined handle and side brace extended laterally from said frame bar and adapted to be connected with the fence wires, substantially as set forth.
2. In ahand fence machine, thecombination of an upright frame bar having a series of short shuttle arms, a series of swinging shuttle bars pivoted at their inner ends to said shuttle arms and having at their outer ends right-angulariy disposed wire heads provided with wire notched in their opposite ends, a combined handle and side brace extended laterally from the frame bar at an intermediate point and provided with an angled outer end, and a supplemental shuttle bar pivoted to said angled end and having a notched right angularly disposed wire head, said supplemental shuttle bar and its head being arranged in a line with an intermediate one of the other shuttle bars, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
