BAKERS OVEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,251, dated March 27, 1894.

A plication filed July 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND SToLz, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bakers Ovens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention refers more particularly to an improved attachment for bakers oven designed for the purpose of lighting the interior thereof and providing it with steam for producing an improved product, all as more fully hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a bakers oven of known construction to which my attachment is applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on line was in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line y y in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar horizontal section on line zz in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the bow window.

The oven which I show in the drawings is of the usual kind, which has an arched brick chamber A in which light wood or sticks are burned inside, to heat the interior of the chamber preparatory to baking, but my invention applies as well to any kind of oven for bakers use.

My invention consists in an improved attachment to light the interior of the chamber and also to furnish steam into the interior while baking bread which it is well understood improves the product. To this end I form in the oven at any suitable place preferably in proximity to or beside the usual oven door B, an aperture into the oven in which I place my attachment. This consists of a cast iron frame 0 which forms a lining for the opening in the wall, and which has three half-circular projections D D D extending into the oven A. The vertical distance between these three half circular projections or shelves is such that the lower shelf D rests upon the bottom of the oven, the top shelf D projects immediately under the arch of the oven and the intermediate shelf D is about midway between. shelves, being made to this end substantially of semicylindrical shape, its inward displacement being prevented by annular flanges a running around the shelves.

A supply pipe F communicates through the opening in front into the top of the boiler and has a valve G for closing it, and this supply pipe communicates with the vertical filling tube H which terminates at the top in a funnel I and is connected to the supply pipe through a union coupling F. In asimilar manner a steam pipe J extends from the boiler through the aperture in front and is connected by a return bend with the return pipe K into the oven, the pipes being connected together by a union coupling L and a valve M is placed in this steam pipe. The object of this boiler is to generate steam. To this end when the oven is being heated the boiler is filled with water which is heated by the fire in the oven and by the heat of the oven during the subsequent baking thus generating steam which is admitted into the oven by closingthe valve G and opening the valve M. If not wanted the valve M may be closed and the valve G opened.

The whole boiler may be withdrawn for inspection and repair by unscrewing the couplings F and L when it can be withdrawn from its position through the opening formed by the casing.

For the purpose of lighting the interior of the oven a bow window N of suitable shape to form a closing medium between the upper shelf D and intermediate shelf D is inserted between the two and held in place against inward displacement by suitable annular flanges b b formed around the respective shelves. This bow window is constructedin the form of a metallic skeleton frame with mica windows 0 and with rearwardly projecting handles P, whereby it may be readily withdrawn when not needed. When in place, as shown in Fig. 2, this bow window projects inside the oven and permits the use of a lamp placed so far inside as to light the whole interior. For the purpose of suitable draft for the lamp I place a ventilator pipe Q through the top shelf D which ventilating pipe Ilead into the chimney of the oven. In front of the opening which contains the bow window, I provide a door R for closing the opening removably supported between the shelves D D, the bow Window N provided with the han- 15 dles P removably secured between the shelves D D the door R and the supply and steam connection of the boiler E, all combined and arranged, substantially as described.
