Description
Umts@ Sterns MILLARD L. HYDORN, OF KENT COUNTY, DELAWARE.
CORN-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,143, dated March 27, 1894.
Application filed October 8, 1892. Serial No. 448,270. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MILLARD L. HYDORN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Kent and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in corn cutting machines, the object of which is to cut and carry a sufficient amount of corn to form a shock. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated inthe accompanying drawings in which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure l. is a top view of the entire machine. Fig. 2. is a side view of a portion of the frame, with standards D tov which is attached the adjustable plate L for raising or lowering the platform P. Fig. 3. is a vertical section of the forward part of the machine, showing the mechanism used to raise and lower the front end. Fig. 4. isaside view of the platform showing manner in which the rack is fitted. Fig. 5., is a cross section of knife, knife frame and beveling attachment. Fig. 6. is a view of part of platform showing two intermediate stanchions with check chain in place.
I do not confine myself to any specific design for framing said machines, nor do I restrict myself to the use of material shown in each part of machine, in some parts iron may be substituted for wood. The platform P is preferably made of wood rmly screwed or bolted onto suitably framed bed pieces of suitable size, either wood or iron. On each side of the platform securely bolted to the frame is a standard D with vertical flanges ff. between which the movable plate L (to which is attached the arm a) is adjusted: upon the arm a the wheels V. V. rotate and thus by moving the plate L the rear end of platform is raised or lowered the distance desired. The front end of platform is supported by the frame m of the front or steering wheel W. The frame m is pivoted on the coupling pin i in the coupling g which is securely bolted into the central bed piece of frame. By placing one or more of the washers h. h. below the extension piece of frame m inthe coupling g the front end of machine is raised to the height desired and by reversing, the sanne is lowered. The top of platform P is iitted with rack R consisting of stanchions s. s. securely bolted to the platform rods r. a". and check chains c. c. The two intermediate rails K. K. are placed so as to divide the platform crosswise into three equal spaces, check chains c. c. Fig. 6 are arranged at every foot along the top rail in any known convenient manner, so that as each armful of cut corn is taken in it is deposited in one of the eighteen spaces so formed and there secured by the check chain c.
The knife frame q shown in Fig. 5 is securely bolted onto-the frame of the platform P, as shown in Fig. 4. and is beveled on its upper side. An adjustable beveled piece b. is fitted to this frame, having its bolt holes slotted toward the inner edge, so that as it is drawn outward the cuttingedge of knife is raised to desired angle. The knife n, knife frame g. and adjusting bevel piece b are securely bolted together in manner shown.
The wheels V. V. are of any ordinary pattern having a broad tread and preferably of iron or steel as shown.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a corn cutting machine of a platform P with rack R fitted with stanchions s. s., rods r. r. andcheck chains c. c. all substantially as shown. MILLARD L.HYDORN. Witnesses:
CEAS. G. FISHER, A. B. CULLEN.
