ATTACHMENT FOR BRICK-MAKING MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,010, dated March 20,1894.

Be it known that I, LEMUEL PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Brick-Making Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved attachment for brick making machines, and has for its object, the striking oft of the surplus clay from the top of the mold in which the bricks are formed, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apparatus partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the knives used in connection with my device. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the supporting blocks detached from the endless belt for operating the knives.

To put my invention into practice I provide an endless belt 4, and attach at regular intervals along the same in an oblique position a series of knives 8. Each of these knives 8 is mounted'in a block 7, which is attached to a cross piece 18 by means of rivets 12. This belt 4 constructed as described is mounted on two rollers 1, attached to shafts 5 which are arranged in bearings 6 supported on an adjustable frame 2. This frame 2 is capable of being adjusted vertically along the posts 3, and held at any desired position by means of the set screws 10. This vertical movement of the frame 2 is for the purpose of elevating and lowering the knives 8 to adjust the same with reference to the brick molds 9 beneath.

In operation power is applied to the shaft 5 to give the same a rotary movement thereby putting the belt 4 in motion. The mold 9 to be struck off or have the surplus clay removed is pushed sidewise beneath the belt 4, and the cutters moving rapidly over the same, sweep the clay off the molds even with the top of the same. To loosen. the bricks thus formed in the mold, the same is placed over v a groove 16 formed in the table. Operating in this groove 16 is a bar 16' connected to a pitman, crank or other means of giving the same a quick backward and forward movement along the length of the said groove. This bar 16 is provided with two knockers 19 which come violently in contact with the sides'of the mold 9, and the concussion jars the inclosed bricks sufficient to loosen the same. This groove and bar maybe arranged under the belt 4, in some cases.

Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein described apparatus for strik- 7o ing off brick molds, consisting of the endless belt 4 and means for operating the same, the frame 2 carrying said belt capable of being adjusted vertically, the knives 8 attached in an oblique position on the said belt, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
