To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRITZ BITTER VON DOR- MUS, engineer, residing at Floridsdorf, near Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Fire-Boxes, (for which I obtained a patent in England April 9, 1892, No. 6,858; in France April 9, 1892, No. 220,800; in Belgium April 11, 1892, No. 99,185; in Switzerland October 15, 1892, No. 5,282, and in Austria-Hungary November 6, 1892, No. 4,148 and N 0. 59,916,) of which the following is a true, correct,'and complete specification.
In the drawings:-Figure 1, is a part of a boiler showing the fire box in section. Fig. 2, is a rear View showing the shells of the boiler and fire box and the connecting brace between. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional view.
The fire box is surrounded by the jacket of the boiler between which the water circulates and this box is open in the rear for its entire height and breadth. The upper and side walls of the jacket of the boiler are connected with the upper and side walls ofthe fire box by means of the interposed bow piece a, and this piece and the walls are still further stayed by means of cross bars b and c, the latter serving at the same time as a support for the rear end of the grate. A Water box (1 is inserted in the rear of the box at the upper end covering the entire breadth of the fire box and protruding into the fire room. This water box communicates with the main boiler by the tube e through which the steam coming from the water box issues into the main boiler and on the other side by the tube f through which the water of the main boiler passes into the Water box (2. These tubes and the connecting pieces by which they are fixed to the boiler and water box, are located outside of the fire box. The water box can be easily cleaned by means of large and small openings g suitably closed. The opening to the fire box located above the water box 61 is closed by a plate h provided with an opening (not shown) that can also be closed through which the fire tubes can be inspected. Within the box is a fire screen 2' made of a fire proof material projecting from the rear wall of the fire box and this screen extends upwardly as shown in Fig. 1, at an inclination.

The upper opening 10, does not need to extend over the entire breadth of the fire box as it serves for the admission of air for the combustion. The coal is carried into the space q and feeds forward in the proportion that the combustion proceeds upon the grate, is converted into gas in the space 0" between the water box and the grate and reaches finally the part 8 of the grate where it burns in the shape of coke. The gases that rise at ,r are carried from the water boxinto the space 25 where they mix'with the gas generated at s and are burned completely. combustion is continuous and all the disadvantages of a periodical heating and the disadvantages caused by the opening of the fire box door (consisting especially therein that the great quantity of inflowing cold air disturbs the combustion and that the boiler suffers by those sudden changes of temperature) are avoided. The single stages of the combustion are such that a most complete combustion is secured with a minimum excess of air.
I claim- 1. A boiler having a fire box and a bow piece a interposed between the boiler jacket and the fire box shell, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a boiler, a fire box having an inclined grate and a dumping section, a fire chest located at the upper end of said grate having a lower fuel opening and an upper air inlet, a vertically arranged inwardly swinging door closing the fuel opening, and an inclined outwardly swinging door closing the air inlet, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the boiler, the fire box having an inclined grate, the inclined screen 1' located above said grate, and the inclined water box located in rear of the screen and having a space between their adjoining edges for the products of combustion, and steam and water connections from the rear of the water box around the fire box to the sides of the boiler, substantially as described.
