To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES OREToRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State oflllinois,have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Automatic Roasting Apparatus for Peanuts, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. i

This invention relates to that type of automatic peanut roastersin which, means are pro videdfor automatically rotating the roasting cylinder, as well as operating a corn pepper or other attachment.

The objects of the present improvement are to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the parts of an automatic roaster, embodying a convenient arrangement of the difierent compartments or receptacles, whereby a ready and convenient access is gained to the different compartments, while the contents thereof are exposed in a very presentable manner, while being protected from the dust, &c., and kept in a properly heated or warm condition. y I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical longitudinal section of an automatic roasting apparatus for peanuts, &c., constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2,adetail'transverse section of the same at line a2-a: Fig. 2.

Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the different views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the ordinary revolving peanut roasting cylinder arranged in a horizontal plane, immediately back of the main upper chamber or compartment 2 of the apparatus, and cutoff from the same by means of the curved partition 3, that incloses the forward upper part of the roaster cylinder, and forms a flue in connection with that part of the exterior of the cylinder, to direct the products of combustion against the cylinder, the rearward portion of the cylinder being inclosed by a semicircular plate or wall 5, that forms a similar flue, at the rear side of the roasting cylinder, and a combustion chamber underneath the same for the reception of a suitable burner 6, by which heat is afforded for the roasting operation. Motion is communicated to the roasting cylinder through suitable connections, from the miniature steam engine 7 arranged in the rear portion of the main upper chamber 2, and receiving its supply of steam from the boiler 8, through suitable pipe connections. The boiler8 is-arranged in a horizontal plane, at the lower rear end of the apparatus, and a short distance below and forward of the roasting cylinder, so that the products of combustion from its heater or burner 9, can be carried off in a convenient manner, without interfering with the functions of the roasting cylinder orits heater or burner, and for the additional purpose of' admitting of a ready division of the sides of the casing end walls 10 of the casing along a diagonal line 11, passing through an axial line coincident with the axis of the boiler, so as to admit of a ready detachment of the upper part of the side walls in removing the boiler for repairs. The boiler 8 is inclosed by the curved front partition 14, and rear wall of the apparatus to form a fire chamber surrounding the same, the lower portion thereof forming a combustion chamber for the reception of the heater or burner 9, by which the boiler is heated.

15, is a roasted peanut receptacle immediately beneath the main compartment 2 into which the roasted peanuts descend through the inclined curved chute 16, communicating with the roasting compartment at front; the receptacle is formed with an inclined forwardly projecting face 4, suitably glazed to admit an inspection of the contents thereof, the sides being formed with doors 17, to admit of ready access to such contents from either side, while the bottom is formed with a heating chamber 18, to receive exhaust steam from the engine to keep the contents of the receptacle warm. The main chamber or receptacle is of some capacity, and is suitably glazed, and provided with side doors 19, to admit of ready access to its interior, which is adapted to contain in its upper portion a corn popper or roasting cylinder 20, heated by a suitable burner as shown and driven by suit able connections from the engine 7. The

lower portion of the main chamber forming a receptacle for the popped corn. In the prescut invention the popper or roasting cylinder is of a horizontal arrangement, supported by hangers 21, extending down from the top of the casing of the main compartment as shown.

22 is a closed chamber underneath the bottom of main receptacle 2, adapted to receive a portion of the exhaust of the engine through pipe connection 23, to keep the articles in the bottom of the main chamber in a warm condition.

24, is a handle at the rear of the apparatus for convenience in moving the same. 25, are legs, for the same, having rollers 26, for convenience in moving.

27, is a ventilator in the top of the main chamber for the escape of vapor therefrom, and 28 is a door communicating with the interior of the boiler chamber, for the better inspection of the flame, 650., within the same.

As a fuel for the apparatus, either gas, gasoline or oil may be used as found most convenient or desirable.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An automatic apparatus for roasting peanuts (Sac. comprising in combination, a steam boiler arranged at the lower rear end of the apparatus, immediately below and a short distance in front of the roasting cylinder,'the curved wall 14 forming independent inclosing chambers for the boilerand roasting cylinder, and the rear warming wall of the roasted peanut receptacle 15, a roasting cylinder receiving motion from a steam engine arranged in the rear part of the main chamber adjacent to the roasting cylinder, and a main chamber and a roasted peanut receptacle arranged in front of the boiler and roasting cylinder, substantially as herein described.
