To all whom it may concern:

Be known that I, JOHN LANG, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of 4 Beak Street, Regent Street, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oorsets, (for which I have obtained patents in Great Britain, No. 22,816, bearing date December 12, 1892; in France, No. 227,023, dated January 10, 1893; in Belgium, No. 102,928, dated January 10, 1893, and in Germany, No. 19,489, dated NovemberlS, 1893,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in stays or corsets which are more particularly designed for stout people as an abdominal support and has for its object to combine a perfect fit with ease, elegance, and comfort, while at the same time improving the figure by affording efficient support, without undue pressure, where it is mostly needed.

In carrying my invention into practice I form my improved stays with a number of horizontal pieces stitched together and provided with steels and busks secured thereto in the ordinary manner.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a front View of my improved stays or corsets fitted to a figure. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same shown separately. Fig. 3 represents the pieces of the corset in detail, showing plan views of the same before they are secured together.

The front ends of these pieces extend from the busks 'i. i. to the back bones j j the rear ends a. b. c. d. 6. being furnished with eyelets e and attached to the back bones j j. The pieces 5 and 6 form the front portion of the abdominal part of the corset which pieces being from fifteen to twenty inches long in front reduce the size of the abdomen while at the same givingsupport without pressure, thus conducing to the health of the wearer. The pieces 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. have the shape clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, their front ends being secured to the busks it" while the rear ends a. b. c. d. e. of five of the pieces 1. 2. 3. 4.. and 7 are fixed to the back bones jj' and being provided with eyelets e as above stated allow of two stays or sets of five pieces to be laced in the ordinary manner as shown in Fig. 2. The two pieces 5. and 6. are placed in front being located between the long pieces 4 and 7 so as to form the front curvature of the stays which support the abdomen, the ends 6 and d of the pieces 7 and at forming the curvature for the rear sides.

I do not confine myself to the use of seven horizontal pieces as more but narrower middle sections may be used if necessary, and it will be evident that by means of my invention the natural position of the bosom of the wearer will be retained as it cannot drop lower than the seam connecting parts 1 and 2 together.

The arrangement of the pieces 1. 2. 3. 4 and 7 in horizontal layers will be conducive to much ease and comfort as the fleshy parts will thereby receive proper support and at the same time be allowed free play without causing an uncomfortable amount of constriction. All the seven pieces are stitched together, and when the stays are thus completed rows of steel, whalebone or the like S. S. are fixed thereto in the ordinary manner.

The selvages of the materials used in con structing my improved corsets run with the seams and they can, be made in satin or other suitable material lined with jean or otherwise as may be desired, the seams and selvages of the lining being coincident with those of the outside.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
