COLLAR-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,683, dated March 20, 1894.

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN HURST and LEOPOLD RosENBERG, both citizens of the United States, residingin the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collar- Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like figures of reference refer to like parts wherever they occur, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a preferred form of our device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same.A Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a top plan View, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of av modification.

Our.invention relates to a new and useful collar button, the object being, to construct a device of the kind described, in such manner, that the same 'is susceptible of longitudinal adjustment, which permits the wearer to readily and easily attach a collar which might be slightly smaller than the diameter of the neck band of the shirt. This adjustment has its many advantages, derived from the fact, that frequently collars are purchased, which, when new, fit the neck band properly, but

when they are washed, prove to be too small by reason of their shrinkage. Again it is often the case that the button holes in the neck band, become worn and broken, and when in such condition, the wearer finds that contraction of the band to fit a given size collar is necessary, otherwise the attachment of a collar will cause uneasiness as long as worn. 1

Our invention is designed to obviate this difliculty, and consists in constructing a collar button, adapted to be inserted'in the neck band of a shirt, as usual, which button is provided with button heads which afford attachment for the collar, which heads are susceptible of adjustment to and from each other, to accommodate collars of varying sizes, up to a given limit, which may be smaller than the neck band of the shirt.

Another feature of our invention resides in the adaptability of bringing the adjustable heads in such proximity that they may b used as a single button.

in certain peculiar features of construction as will hereinafter be described, and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the neck-band head, or base as it may more properly be termed, and 2 its shank. This shank 2, as shown in. Figs. l, 2 and 3, is V-shaped, and has its divided portion secured to a slotted bar 3, as shown. The shank is so constructed for reasons of economy, as it is obvious that other and as useful forms may be utilized.

3 indicates a bar, preferably curved to conform to the curvature of the neck-band, against which, its. under side generally rests, said bar being slotted longitudinally, as at 4, said slot having 'its side walls bent up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to form a retaining shoulder forthe slide blocks. Slidingly mounted in this slot 4, are slide blocks 5, which are tapped to receive the screw threaded portions 6 of the shanks 7 of the collar button-heads 8.

The shanks, together with the screw threaded portions 6, form shoulders which are larger in diameter than the width of the slot, which shoulders impinge against the bar 3, and when the shank and head 7-8 are turned, by the screw threaded connection between the portion 6 and the slide block 5, it will tightly bind the heads 8 in their adjusted position.

Should it be desired at any time to use our button toattach a collar which fitted the neck band perfectly, and it was not desired to use the extension feature, as was the case when a smaller collar was sought to be attached, the heads 8 are turned slightly so as to release the slide blocks 5and the heads are brought together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. To bet ter accomplish the close `proximity of the heads, we preferably cutaway their inner sides, as at 82L which enables them to be brought more closely together. We preferably arrange along the lower side edge of the bar 3, prongs or sharp pointed projections 9, which may be used to retain a necktie in position, by extending beneath the collar, at which point they engage the necktie.

In the modification shown in Fig. 5, we have illustrated another form of our invention, in which 1 indicates the head which is adapted to be inserted in the neck bank of the shirt, and 2 the shank therefor.

3 indicates a cap piece attached to the shank 2 which cap piece has its side edges turned over to encircle two sliding plates or bars 4 and 5. These bars have mounted on their outer ends, the collar button heads 6, and are adapted to slide, one upon the other, by having their inner ends provided with overlapping lianges 4;" and 5 which clasp the other sliding section respectively. One of these bars 5 is slotted to permit the passage of the shank of the collar button head on the bar 4 to pass the same, and admit of the close proximity of the two heads 6.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a collar button, the combination'with the button head or stud which is adapted to be secured in the button-hole in the neck-band ofta shirt, of a bar secured thereto, collar button heads which are slidingly mounted on the bar, and means `for adjusting said button heads toward and from each other,substan tially as described.

In a `collar button, the combination with means of attachment to a shirt, of two collar button heads which are adjustable toward and from each other, said heads being cut away so as to closely fit together to form substantially a single head, substantially as de scribed.

4. In a collar button, the combination with means of attachment to a shirt, of a bar provided with a slot having a raised side edge, slide blocks mounted in said slot, and collar button heads which have their shanks screw threaded into said blocks, said Shanks being of a diameter greater than the Width of the slot, substantially as described.

5. In a collar button, the combination with the neck-band head, of a V-shaped shank, a slotted bar secured to the ends of said shank, slide blocks mounted in said slot, and collar button heads which are mounted in and have a screw threaded connection with said blocks, substantially as described.

6. In a collar button,the combination with the means of attachment to a shirt, of a bar upon which is mounted adjustable collar button heads, and prongs or sharp pointed projections on said bar for retaining a neck-tie in position, substantially as described.
