WAGON-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 516,595, dated March 13, 1894. Application filed .Tune 6, 1893- Serial No. 476,770- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY P. GArNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKenzie, in the county of Carroll and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Wagon-Bed, of which the following is a specification.
' The invention relates to improvements in wagon beds.
The object of the present invention is to improve the constructiori of wagon beds and to provide one in which an upper or corn frame may be readily attached to the wagon bed proper without necessitating the employment of the ordinary end rods for holding the upper side boards together.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a wagon bed constructed in accordance with this invention, the upper frame being in position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the upper frame being detached. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of one of the staples. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the hook bars.

1 designates the floor or bottom of a wagon bed proper, which is provided on its lower facewith laterally projecting transverse cleats 2, and having secured to its upper face sides 3. The sides 3 are secured to the bottom 1 by clamping staples 4 and 5, arranged at the ends of the body and at intermediate points and located at the inner faces of the sides 3 and having their legs extending downward through the body-bottom 1 and the transverse cleats 2, and threaded and receiving straining nuts 6. The tops of the staples or clamps extend outward and terminate beyond the sides 3, which they engage,in loops 7, receiving standards 8, which have their lower ends stepped in sockets of the extended ends of the transverse cleats. The staples 4, which are located at the ends of the body, have their loops extending outward horizontally; but
extend horizontally from the .lower ends of I the bends 10.
The tendency of the inner clamps or staples 5, on screwing up the nuts 6, is to draw the sides 3 inward; and to counteract this action and to draw the sides outward to secure the same in a vertical position outer clamping hook-bars ll are provided. The bars 11 are arranged on the outer faces of the sides 3 and have their hooks, at their upper ends; the hooks are arranged within the sides of the staples and fit over and engage the upper edges of the sides 3 of the body; and thelower ends of the bars 11 extend through the cleats and are threaded and receive straining nuts 12.
The standards 8 are arranged in the loops of the staples 4 and 5 and pass through lower eyes or staples 13, of the sides 3, of the body, and extend upward beyond the sides 3 and support upper side-boards 14, of a top-box or corn-frame which is adapted to be quickly placed on and as readily removed from the wagon bed proper to increase the size of the latter. The upper side-boards 14 of the topframe or box are provided, at their ends, with eyes or staples 15, to receive the end standards, and have secured on their inner faces, at their ends, vertical cleats 16, arranged in pairs to form ways and receiving between them end-boards 17 and 18, which are removable.
The upper side-boards 14, and the end gates are removable and may be quickly placed in position and rapidly detached, and it will be readily apparent that the staples and hookbars obviate the necessity of employing endrods for bracing and connecting the upper side-boards 14.
The wagon bed is provided at each side with a T- shaped rub-iron 19, which is provided, at the top and bottom, with securingplates, and the latter are fastened to the upper edge of the adjacent side 3 and to the lower face of the bottom 1.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this inventlon.
What I claim isv 1. The combination in a wagon bed, of a 5 bottom, a side, a standard, and a clamping staple arranged on the inner face of the side and passing through the bottom and extend 111g over and engaging the top of the side and bent downward forming a hook and extending horizontally from the side and receiving and engaging the standard, substantially as described. a
2. The'combination in a wagon bed, of a bottom, a side, a standard, and a clamping staple arranged on the inner face of the side and extendingover and engaging the top of the side and projecting outward therefrom and-reeeivingand engaging the standard, the
lowerends-of the sides of the staples being i bottom, a side, a standard, andinnerand'outer threaded and provided with nuts, acleat arranged-on thebottom of the bed and receivlog the lower ends of the sides of the staple, and a bar arranged on the outer face of the side and provided at its upper end with a barhavingits lower ends threaded and ex tended through thecleat and provided with 5 rangedon the inner faces of the sides and hook arranged Within the top of the staple and engaging the upper edge of the side, said provided at their tops with horizontally-disposed outwardly-extending loopsand having the lower ends of their sides passed through the bottom of the bed and the cleats and provided with nuts, bars arranged on the outer faces of the sides and provided at their upper ends with hooks arranged within the staples and engaging the upper edges of the sides of the bed, the lower ends of the bars extending through the cleats, threaded and provided with nuts, standards arranged in the loops of the staples and said eyes, upper side boards supported by the standards and provided with eyes receiving the end-standards, said upper side-boards being provided at their inner faces with vertical ways, andend-gates arranged in the ways, substantially as described.
4:. The combination in a wagon body, of a clamps arranged on the inner and outerfaces of the side and engaging the top thereofand secured to the bottom and provided with straining nuts, the inner clamp being extended: beyond the sideand receiving and enthe presence of two witnesses.
