'5 new and useful Improvements in Sprocket- Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make IO and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

My invention relates to improvements in a sprocket wheel of the type shown in United States Letters Patent No. 457,420, granted to me August 11, 1891.

Its main object is to prevent the chain'fromrunning upon the ears which are intended to :0 guide it upon the sprockets.

It consists essentially of forming or providing the ears opposite the sprockets with lateral projections by which the conveyer chain, in case it is carried to one side, is prevented from engaging with said ears, and is guided back between said ears into its proper position upon the sprockets.

The accompanying drawing shows in a perspective view a sprocket wheel provided with 3 my improvement.

I have found by experience that the guiding ears placed opposite the sprockets and constructed as shown and describedin my former patent above referred to, while gener- 3 5 ally efiecting the purpose for which they were designed, sometimes engage with the links of the chain when it is deflected to one side of its proper course, and the wheel or its connections is thus broken or otherwise injured or 40 displaced. To avoid this difliculty and to carry the conveyer chain back to its proper position upon the sprockets'iu case it is accidentally deflected to one side so as to cause the links to run upon the ends of the guiding ears, I form or provide said ears at or near their ends with lateral projections, which are inclined inwardly toward the interposed sprockets.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a sprocket wheel of the same general construction'as that shown in my former patent, and provided in like manner with sprocketsB B,

and at each side thereof with ears 0, which 7 project radially beyond the sprockets. Clear open spaces for alternate links of the chain are left between the sprockets and the associated ears. Upon their outer faces and at or near theirouter ends, I form or provide these ears with lateral projections c, which are inclined from .their outer extremities c inwardly to the ends of said ears, so that in case the conveyer chain is deflected and carried thereon, the links will be prevented from passing over and engaging with the ears 0, and will be guided back into proper position upon the sprockets B. These lateral projections may be cast in the shape of wings integrally with the ears 0, or may be made separate and attached thereto. They may also be variously modified as to form without materially affecting their mode of operation.

I claim- 1. A sprocket wheel provided on each side of and opposite the sprockets with ears having lateral guiding projections at their ends, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A sprocket wheel provided on each side of and directly opposite the sprockets with ears having lateral projections at their outer ends inclined inwardly toward the sprockets, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. A sprocket wheel provided on each side of and directly opposite the sprockets, with ears extending radially beyond the sprockets and having lateral'projections at their outer ends inclined inwardly toward the sprockets, so as to guide and retain the chain thereon,

said sprocket wheel having clear open spaces between the sprockets and the associated ears for alternate links of the chain, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
