Be it known that we, CHARLES S. BUSHELL and FRED W. DEGLER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Menasha, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supports for Washtubs, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a support for wash tubs, or a leg for clamping upon the sides of a tub at three points in its circumference for the purpose of holding the tub in a sufficiently elevated position for the convenience of the person using it, and the object of our invention is, to provide a device for holding tubs which is of low cost, is of light weight, is convenient for use, and can be stored away in a small space. We attain these objects by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation, showing a wash tub, elevated and resting upon three supports of our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan, showing a top view of a tub thus supported. The nine following figures are upon a larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 4 is an edge view of said support. Fig. 5 is a side view of a support having a modification in the clevices for securing the support upon a tub, the upper part beingin section on line a, a, Fig. 6, and Fig. 6 an edge view of the support having said modification thereon. The following figures are details, Fig. 7 being a rear, or an outside view of the hook in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4., which is secured to the leg, or wood part of the support, for clasping over the top edge of the tub; Fig. 8 a side view of said hook; Fig. 9 a top view thereof; Fig. 10 a top view of a bracket which is used in the modification, (Figs. 5 and 6,) for supporting the chine of the tub upon; Fig. 11 a side view of said bracket; Fig. 12 a side elevation of a hook which is used in the modification, (Figs. 5 and 6,) for application to the upper end of the leg and for clasping over the upper edge of the tub; Fig. 13 a top view of said hook; Fig. 14. a view of the rear, or outer side of said hook, and Fig. 15, an elevation of a plug and spring guide which are used with the hook modification. Referring to the supporting legs-shown pin 6, hook 7 ,eccentric lever 5, bolt 5', bracket 3, links at and rivets 4, which parts when properly assembled constitute one of the supporting legs. Three ofthese legs comprise one set which are applied at the several points around the tub as shown in Fig. 2. The legs are adjusted to fit the height of the tub by placing the proper notch, 7", upon the pin 6, for giving the necessary distance for taking in the tub between the bracket 3 and the upper end of the hook. The hook is then hooked over the top of the tub and the bracket brought under the chine, when with a partial turn of the eccentric lever the bracket is forced upward against the chine of the tub and the leg thereby secured firmly. The tub in Fig. 1 has a part of its top and bottom broken away and showing the hook 7 and bracket 3 upon the center leg clamped over the top and bottom edges of the side of'the tub. The bracket 3 is connected loosely with the leg by means of the links 4 and pins or rivets 4: whereby it can be raised upon the leg by the turning of the eccentric lever. It will be observed that the ears 7", upon the hook 7, are arranged in position below the lower end of the body of the hook and at a distance from said body, for the purpose of allowing the top of the hook to be thrown away from the leg for disconnecting the notches 7" from the pin 6', as it is shown to be by the dotted outline of the hook in Fig. 3. After the three legs are applied, which is best done with the tub resting upon its side, the tub is placed in position for its use, as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen it is desired to remove the legs the tub should be turned upon its side and a turn given to the eccentric lever of each leg, when the several legs may be taken off and hung up, or laid away in any convenient place. They occupy but little room, and being designed especially for supporting wash tubs, will not be likely to be used for any other purpose, but be always ready for use.

In the modification of the leg, Figs. 5 and 6, a different way of constructing the tub connecting device is provided. The legs 2' are provided intermediate their ends with a slot 11 for receiving the bracket 3, and in their top with a circular hole 9, which hole communicates with "the inside of the leg and is adapted to receive the circular ended lug 8', of the book 8. In the upper end of Fig. 5 the leg 2' and book 8 are shown in section upon the line a, a,of Fig. 6, the more plainly to show the construction of the parts. The bracket 3', is'provided with holes 3 and 3', for receiving a pin, or bolt, 12' and 12", the former of which bolts is adapted to enter any one of the holes 12 for the purpose of adjusting the bracket at different heights upon the leg for meeting the requirements of tubs of different lengths, and the latter bolt is for insertion into the hole 3', for bearing against the leg and preventing the bracket from turning and allowing the tub to drop from it. The hook 8 is provided with the circular ended lug, 8' and band 8", the lug being adapted to enter and to move Vertically in the hole 9, and the band to surround the upper end of the leg, 2, and to permit the hook to move easily up and down upon it. A plug 10, is provided for enlering and closing the upper end of the hole 9, said plug having a wire extended centrally from its lower end which is adapted to pass easily through ahole, 8", in the lug 8', and is of sufiicient length to extend into theleg below the bottom of the hole 9. Theplugis provided with a hole for receiving a pin 10 for connectingtheplugtotheleg. Thehook8beingplaced in its position upon the leg,a spring,10", which may be made of Wire wound into a cylindrical form, is provided and placed upon the lug 8', when the plug may be inserted and secured to the leg, its wire passing downward inside of the spring, through the lug 8 and into the wood of the leg, and serving thereby as a guide for the spring and fol-holding the lower end of the hook 8 upon the leg. By taking hold of the upper extremity of the hook it can be raised, relative to the leg, an amount within the limit of the compression of the spring, 10", and the hook brought over the upper edge of the tub, when the hold upon the hook being released, the spring thereof will expand and force the hook down upon the tub and thereby secure the leg upon the tub. The leg can be quickly and easily removed by taking hold of the upper end of the hook, giving to it a slight pull, and compressing the spring sufficiently for allowing the hook-to be released from the edge of the tub.

Sets of the legs, 2 01-2, may be made of different lengths from their lower ends to the tub supporting brackets, for the pu rpose of adapting them for the use of .persons of dilferent heights, but for the purpose of adapting one set forithe use of both, a tall or a short person, we provide a leg extension piece, 14. For the application of the extension pieces the legs are each provided with a slot, 13, shown in Fig. 1, extending from the lower end of the leg upward a short distance, and the legs are also provided with a pin, 13,near their lower ends. The extension piece 14, has upon its outer side a rib 14', having numerous notches 14", any one of which is adapted to be hooked upon the aforesaid pin. Said extension piece has also upon its outer side an arm 14', extending upward from the rib 14, and is provided upon its outer extremity with cars 14", which ears like the ears 7", upon the hook 7, are located relative to the body of the piece, for allowing said piece to be thrown away from the leg for allowing the connection and disconnection of the notches 14" from the pin 13. Upon one side of the extension piece is a lug 15, into which two small holes are drilled for receiving the wire spring 16. One of said holes is drilled only partly through the lug into which one end of the spring is inserted, and the other hole drilled entirely through and the wire of the spring passed through it andbent around at a right angle and again st the lug, whereby the spring is held from longitudinal movement. The spring is bent so as to have its upper, or free end, bear against the leg above the extension piece, and when the pin 13 engages one of the notches 14", hold said piece against the leg.

of the extension piece upon the leg for raising or lowering the height of the tub, it is only necessary to take hold of it by its lower end, disconnect the notch then engaging the pin 13, slide said piece up, or down, and engage some other notch, the spring 16, while allowing said movement, when the leg is supporting the tub, keeps the extension piece in close contact with the leg.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. A leg for supporting a wash tub in an elevated position, having a slot extending from its upper end downward, a pin transversely through said leg and slot, a hook arranged upon the leg for grasping over the upper edge of the tub, said hook extending downward upon the leg and being provided with a rib havinga series of notches therein, the rib being adapted for a longitudinal movement in said slot, and the notches for engagement with said pin, and means for retaining the hook upon the leg while allowing the disengagement of said notches from the pin aforesaid, substantially as described.

2. A wash tub support, consisting of a leg having a slot extending from its top end downward, a pin through the leg and slot,

transversely of the slot, a hook adapted to en gage the tub by its upper edge, said hook being provided with a projecting rib adapted for movement longitudinally of the slot, notches in said rib arranged for engagement and disengagementwith the pin aforesaid, said rib having also an arm extending through the slot having ears thereon adapted to hold the hook upon the leg, and also, to permit said engagement and disengagement of the notches and pin aforesaid, a tub supporting bracket hinged upon the leg, and an eccentric lever arranged for raising said bracket, and for clamping the tub between the bracket and hook aforesaid, substantially as described.

3. In a leg for supporting a wash tub in an elevated position,a leg extension piece, 14, a slot in the leg from its lower end upward adapted to receive said extension piece, and a pin transversely through said slot and leg, said extension piece having a rib, 14, notches, 14'', car, 147", lug, 15, and spring, 16, substantially as set forth.

4:. A leg for supporting a wash tub in an elevated position, having in combination, a mechanism for securing said leg to the side of the tub, consisting of a hook for engaging the top of said side and a bracket arranged for supporting its bottom, said mechanism being provided with means for its compression upon the ends of said side, and thereby to clamp the leg upon the tub, and both the hook and bracket being adjustable upon the leg for adapting the leg to tubs of difierent lengths of sides, substantially as described.
