PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,035, dated March. 6, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY WALTON, of Vicksburg, in the cou nty of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a puzzle, and it has for its object to provide a puzzle which may be played with amusement, and which while simple in its character will require considerable skill and ingenuity to solve it in a proper manner.

Theinvention consists in the novelconstruction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the puzzle; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

In carrying out the invention a board A, is employed, which board is preferably made square, and constructed with a marginal flange 10, thus producing virtually a sunken field B. Within this field seven blocks 11, are located, the space being just sufticient to accommodate eight blocks, though seven only are used, the space which might be filled by another block permitting the blocks employed to he moved to a limited degree. The field B, is square, but the board need not necessarily be of that shape. The blocks are rectangular in general contour, their length being double that of their width. In one corner of the field two blocks are arranged horizontally, one above the other, and these blocks may be distinguished from the others in any approved manner; in the drawings a star is employed for that purpose. Adjacent to the two horizontally located blocks two other blocks are placed, bearing, for example, the designations one of the capital letter A and the other the capital letter B, and the two blocks marked A and B are arranged Serial No. 465,901, (No model.)

vertically, or in a reverse manner to the blocks bearing the stars. The three remaining blocks are located vertically in the field, one alongside of the other and above the blocks hearing designations.

The object sought to be attained in the solution of the puzzle is to effect an exchange in the position or place occupied by the blocks marked A and 13; that is to say, the block marked A should be carried over to the opposite side of the block marked B, making them read B A instead of A B, and this exchange of position is to be accomplished in a given number of moves, the blocks being simply pushed or moved, but are not to be turned around or taken from the field. Numbers 1, i, 3 and 4, are placed upon the margin of the field, and they constitute an aid in the solution of the puzzle when read in connection with a key which may accompany the puzzle.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A block puzzle, comprising a sunken field, and a series of blocks, some of which have distinguishing characteristics, the blocks being of a length double that of their Width, and of a number less one to fill the field, two of the blocks being arranged horizontally and all the others vertically, substantially as described.

2. A block puzzle, the same consisting of a flanged board, the inclosure made by the flanges being square, seven blocks located within the inclosure, the said inclosure being capable of receiving eight blocks, and each block being of a length double thatof itswidth, two pairs of said blocks having designations produced thereon, one pairof the designating blocks occupying a horizontal and the other pair a vertical position, as and for the purpose set forth.
