To all whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL HOWARD Srofrfr, of Fullwood, in the county ot' Preston, England, have invented a new and Improved Lawu-Sprinkler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lawn sprinkler, which is simple and durable in construction, very efiective in operation, conveniently cleaned, not liable to get clogged up, and arranged to finely divide the water and discharge the saine in sprays, covering the ground uni forrnly in a circular area of which the supporting post is the center.
The invention is embodied in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the `figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is anl enlarged plan view of the same. Eig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of part of the improvement on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Eig 4 is au inverted plan view of the cover plate; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the cup.
The improved lawn sprinkler is provided with a pipeA carrying at its lower end a T B supporting a coupling C, connected with the supply hose I) leading from a suitable source of Water supply. The lower end of the T B is closed by a point or spade E arranged in alignment witlithe pipeA and adapted to be lforced into the ground so' as to support the pipe A in a vertical position. See Fig. l.
On the upper end of the pipe A is screwed or otherwise secured, a cup F formed with a beveled top edge F on which is adapted to be seated a like beveled edge G', of a ilat cover plate G formed with an enlarged central aperture through which passes a bolt H secured on a spider I, whose ends abut an annular shoulder formed in the interior of the cup.
On the outer end of the bolt H screws a hand nut J having an ornamental shape and serving to hold the cover plate G with its beveled edge G firmly seated on the beveled edge F of the cup F. One of the two contacting beveled edges F or G, is provided with radial grooves open at the ends and closed at the open side by the opposite nongrooved beveled edge, so as to form jet apertures along the lines of the grooves for the exit of the water passing into the cup F from the pipe A under pressure.
'As illustrated in the drawings, the beveled edge F is the nou-grooved one, while in the beveled edge G of the cover plate G are formed the radial grooves G2, through which passes the water in jets as before explained. In the cover plate G are also arranged angular discharge openings G3, each made with two concentric bores of which the inner bore is considerably larger in diameter than the outer bore, as plainly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. This construction enables the water to discharge with much greater force than if the bores were of uniform diameter.
Now, it will be seen that when the several parts are in the position shown in Figs. l and 3, the cover plate G is firmly held to its seat on the beveled edge F by the nut J screwing on the bolt H and abutting on the top of the said cover plate. Now, when water under pressure passes through the hose D, coupling C, T B, into the pipe A and from the latter into the cup F, then the water passes through the grooves G2 and the apertures G3 under considerable pressure, whereby the water is finely divided into jets, of which the jets formed by the grooves G2 cover the ground in a circle, while the individual jets of water passing through the apertures G3 are slightly inclined and come down onto the ground within the circle formed by the other jets passing through the grooves G2. ment the entire circular area around the pipe A is saturated with water. 5 Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a lawn sprinkler, the combination ot' the cup, and its cover having correspondingly 1o beveled edges between which are discharge openings, G2, the said cover being provided with an inner circle of apertures, G3, which are inclined at a less angle than said openings, and formed of two diereutial aligned bores, as shown and described, to operate as l5 specified.
