UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. LINDQUIST, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRED LINDQUIST, OF SAME PLACE.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,476, dated February 27, 1894.
Application filed April 3, 1893. Serial No. 68,816. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. LINDQUIST, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Spring VVagon-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring supports for wagon or other vehicle tongues.
lhe object of my invention is to provide a wagon tongue support of a simple, efficient and durable construction, that may be cheaply manufactured and easily and conveniently applied, and which will operate to support the tongue direct from the axle by a direct pulling strain thereon without causing any tilting, prying or other strain upon the hounds, reach or other parts.
To this end my invention consists, in con- 2o nection with the wagon axle and tongue, in
the combination of one or more, preferably two, pulling bars attached to the axle and a spring pivotally connected to said pulling bars, and provided with a hook or loop bear- 2 5 ing against the tongue and another hook or loop bearing against the draw bolt of the hounds; so that the weight of the tongue is supported directly from the axle by a pulling strain thereon communicated through the pulling bars to which the spring is pivoted. The spring is, preferably, made double, that is to say with two coils, the two coils being hogvever made out of one single piece or steel r0 In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a vertical section 0 on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the double coil spring and Fig. a is a like perspective View of the pullingbars which embrace or are hooked to the an e.
In the drawings A represents a wagon or other vehicle axle, or a portion thereof.
B is the tongue, 0 the, hounds, D the draw bolt by which the tongue is pivotally connected to the hounds, and E the bolster.
F F are the pulling bars which are connected to the axle A, preferably by hooks or loops f formed integral with the bars F and adapted to hook under or over and embrace the axle.
G is the spring, the same being preferably a spiral or coil spring, and preferably furnished with two coils g g. The spring G has a loop or hook portion or arm g that bears against the tongue, and a hook or loop portion or arm q that bears against the draw bolt D. Each coil g also has an eye or central opening g to receive the pivot bolt f by which the spring is pivotally connected to the pulling bars F. The pivot bolt f has a head f and nutf The loop portion gof thespring that fits under and bears against the tongue is formed by the middle portion of the spring G, and the two hooks ,7 that hook around the draw bolt D are formed at the two extremities of the rod forming the spring.
The two coils g g of the springG fit, one on one side of the tongue and the other on the other side thereof; and the loop g extends transversely across the tongue. The two vertical sides of the tongue thus in a measure act as guides to keep the spring in position in connection with the sides of the pulling bars F F and the head f and nut f of the bolt f: By this means it will be observed that the tongue is given a spring support without putting any prying or lever strain upon the bounds, reach or other parts of the wagon; and the tongue is supported directly from the axle by apullin g strain thereon communicated thereto through the pulling bars F F. This will be readily understood by reference to Fig.
2, from which it will be seen that the tongue rests upon and is supported by one arm or end 9 of the spring, while the other arm or end 9 of the spring rests against the draw bolt D, and the pivot g of the spring is pivotally connected to the pulling bars F.
The pulling bars F are preferably furnished with a number of holes f for the pivot bolt f to pass through to adjust the normal height 9 5 of the tongue, or the tension of the spring, as may be required from time to time. By sinploying adouble coil spring, one coil fitting on each side of the tongue and the whole made out of a single rod or bar, the spring is made self roo sustaining, so that its coils naturally tend to remain in vertical planes or in position for and a spring pivotally connected to said pu lling bar having one arm fitting against the tongue and another arm fitting against the graw belt of the tongue, substantially as speci- 2. The vehicle tongue support, consisting in the combination of draw .bars ,F F having loops or hooks f f for connecting with the axle, a double coil spring G made of a single piece or rod having eyes g g pivotally connected to said pulling bars, hooked arms g g adapted to connect'with the draw bolt, and arm or loop 9' adapted to bear against the tongue, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of axle A, with tongue 0 and draw bolt D, of hooked pulling bars F F connected to the axle, double coil s'p'ringG having two coils g g, one fitting on each side of the main bar of the tongue and furnished with eyes g giapivot bolt f passing through said pulling bars and the eyes of saidcoils, said spring Ghaving also a looped middle portion g fitting against the tongue, and hooked arms g g fitting against said draw bolt D substantially as specified.
4. A spring support for a wagon or vehicle tongue, consisting in the combination of a pair of pulling bars F F connected to the axle, and a coil spring pivotally connected to said pulling bars and having two arms, one bearing against the tongue to support the same and the other against the draw bolt of the tongue, substantially as specified.
5. A spring supportfor a Wagoner vehicle tongue, consisting in the combination of a pulling bar adapted to be connected with the axle, and a'double coil spring made ina sinlied.
