Description

J.T. H OSTLER. COUPLING DEVICE.
ltnassss I I (No Model.)
l NAfloNAL LIYNOGRAPHING WABNI JOHN T. HOSTLER, OF K ALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
COUPLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,337, dated February 27, 1894:-
Application filed April 20, 1893. Serial No. 471,187- (No model- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. HOSTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Coupling Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means of attaching and detaching the pump rod of a wind mill to the piston rod of a pump.
The objects of my invention are to provide first, a means that can be quickly operated whether the windmill is in motion or not; second, to provide means that shall hold the windmill pump rod and the piston rod of the pump firmly together so there will be no lost motion. I accomplish these results by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a view in perspective of myinvention a portion of the slide being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same the outside plate being removed to show the arrangement of the parts.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
A is the piston rod of a pump.
0, is the pump rod of a windmill.
B, is the iron slide in sections usually'bolted to the bottom of Windmill pump rods. The slide is here adapted to my invention. The slide is expanded at D and a plate D is bolted opposite to it, and projects over the edge of the slide to give a firm hold. A catch E, is pivoted at a and is adapted to drop into the notch r on the side of the pump rod A. On the pin I is fastened a cam n and a short arm e. On the catch E is a pin '5.
In the drawings the catch E is shown engaged in the notch r, the cam n being held against the back of the catch E by theweight of the handle I. The end of the catch E being curved and the notch 7' being also rounded out the cam 'n. presses the two firmly together and prevents lost motion.
When the handle I is' thrown to the position indicated by the dotted lines the arm or projection e passes round and engages the pin '1. and raises catch E from the notch and so disconnects the pump rod of the windmill from the piston rod as is clearly indicated by the dotted lines.
Examination will show that to connect the windmill to the pump by my device all that is necessary is to tip the handle toward the position shown in the drawings and when the motion brings the notch opposite the catch, the catch will drop into the notch and the cam drops to the position shown in the drawings and will hold the catch and the parts securely in place. To disconnect, all that is required is to tipthe handle to the opposite position and the arm e striking the pin 1' will lift the catch out of the notch and the weight of the handle will hold it in that position as shown by the dotted lines. 4
The use of my device is not confined solely to connecting the windmill pump rod to the piston rod of a pump. The same thing can be readily adapted to attach the pump handle to the piston rod, or to connect or disconnect any two parts reciprocating in the same line.
Many variations of my invention will readily occur to the skilled mechanic but I have here shown the form I prefer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a coupling device, the combination of the slide B, catch E pivoted at a and the pin 1', cam 11. and arm e pivoted at I and operated by lever I, the catch E being adapted to fit notch r in rod A, substantially as described.
2. In a coupling device for a wind mill pump rod and the piston rod of a pump, a catch pivoted to the wind mill pump rod and adapted to a notch in the piston rod and a weighted cam adapted to hold the catch firmly in place, substantially as described.
3. In a coupling device for two reciprocating parts, one of the parts adapted to slide in the other, a catch pivoted to one and adapted to a notch on the other, combined with a cam to hold the catch in place and an arm on the cam to withdraw the catch and a weighted handle adapted to operate the parts and hold them in the position desired, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. HOSTLER.
