CUTLERY-GRINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,093, dated February 2-0, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, PHILIP A. OTIS, of Northampton, (Leeds,) inthe county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlery-Grinders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for a knife grinding machine in which a knife maybe held and moved automatically across the grinding face by means that give to the blade the proper taper and the proper crosswise shape while the knife is being ground.
To this end my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the apparatus as a whole and also in their combination as more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a detail View of the knife holding carriage and connecting parts. Fig. 2 is a detail view in side elevation of the carriage and parts. Fig. 3 1s a detail view in vertical section through the carriage and the knife holder. Fig. 4 is a detail view in cross section through the carriage and holder on a plane passing through the blade of the knife and looking from the blade toward the handle part. Fig. 5 is a detail view in crosswise section of the carriage taken back of the knife holder and looking toward the blade. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the knife-holder taken on the line 90-50 of Fig. 1, with the blade removed.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A denotes a frame that is adapted to be mounted on or secured to a table or frame so that the parts attached to this frame A may be held in operative relation to a moving grinding surface.
My invention is particularly adapted for use in combination with an annular grinder but that and its operating mechanism form no part of my present invention and only such parts of the frame and of the knife holdin g carriage as immediately relate to my within invention are shown in the accompanying drawings or described herein.
A carriage or slide B is mounted on the frame on rods c'tthat determine the direction of the movement of the reciprocating slide and on this slide is loosely mounted a knife holder 0. The rear end of this holder is round and extends through a corresponding socket formed in the upward projecting part Z) on the slide and to it is fast a lever arm cl. This knife holder has on its upper surface a socket c adapted to hold the handle and a knife 6 that is secured in the holder by the clamp devicef that consists of a screw f passing through a threaded socket in an upper part of the holder that overarches the socket, the lower end of the screw pressing upon a removable block f 2 that is fitted to the shape of the handle and is interposed between the handle and the clamp screw.
That part of the knife holder in advance of the-clamp is rounded on the under side and flattened on the upper the latter being slightly wider than the blade of a knife adapted to be ground in this apparatus and being also, slightly recessed so as to provide slight flanges 971- along the edge particularly at the back of the knife. This surface is also grooved crosswise of the socket as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings so as to provide for a flow of water or other fluid about the blade while it is being ground.
A guide G is provided at the inner end of the frame in proper position to support the knife holder and the blade of the knife while the latter is being ground. The guide is formed at the upper part of the socketh of a vertical removable base block H the upper end of which is rounded to fitthe rounded under surface of the knife holder. The base" block is supported on the front end of a lever I that is pivoted to the frame and is adapted to support a movable weight of by means of which the degree of pressure of the block upward against the under side of the knifeholder may be graduated. The knife holder is attached to the carriage or slide B somewhat loosely in order to permit of a slight vertical and a slight lateral play as well as having the rocking movement that is imparted by the outer end of the lever arm d projecting into a slot is in the guide It that is adjustably secured to the side of the frame A. The degree of rocking movement of the knife holder Will be determined by the angular position that is given to the guide by the adjustable connecting means. The carriage or slide is given a reciprocating movement by any suitable means connected to a lever I the upper end of which engages the slide and with the exception of the slight freedom of movement allowed to the holder as above described the line of movement and position of the knife holder are exactly determined by the rods that support the carriage in the frame. An adjustable yoke m is secured to the carriage as by means of a bolt and nut and its lower cross-bar is in engagement with the under side of a cam guided that is adjustably secured to the side of the lever as by means of screwspassingthroughslottedopenings. The object of this guide '5 in connection with the yoke that is fast to and moves with the slide is to determine the depth of cut by controlling the extent of movement of the base block toward and the distance that it will lift the knife holder in the direction of the grinding surface.
The mechanism for imparting the rocking movement is for the purpose of enabling the proper shape to be given to the knife blade. The blade of a knife is usually thicker at the heel than at the point but at the point as well as at the heel the back edge is thicker than the cutting edge so that when properly ground the side of the knife is practically a warped surface changing at each point in the length of the knife wit-h the change in thickness of the blade. The means above described enable the exact degree of cut to be arranged and determined so that the knife shall have a proper resulting shape as to taper at the blade and slope of sides from back to edge when it comes from the grinder.
In order to insert or remove a knife when my improved apparatus is used in connection with means for automatically reciprocating the slide it is desirable to hold the carriage at the outer limit of its sliding movement and this is done by means of a latch or catch m that is pivoted to the back part of the frame as shown in Fig. 1, of drawings and has a hook adapted to catch upon any projecting part of the carriage. This may be quickly knocked out of engagement to release the carriage. If vit is desired to give a rounding shape to the blade in the operation of grinding this may be done by connecting to the lever arm that rocks the knife holder means for vibratin g the arm while the carriage is. moving back and forth. v
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a grinder, a frame, a reciprocating carriage mounted on the frame, a knife holder loosely secured to the carriage at the rear end of the holder, alever arm secured to the knife holder and in engagement with a guide, an adjustable guide secured at one side of the line of movement of the knife supporting carriage, and a yielding base block forming a rest for the underneath side of the knife holder, all substantially as described. 7
2. In combination with an annular grinder, a frame secured in operative relation to the grinder, a reciprocating carriage supported on the frame, a yoke secured to the carriage and engaging a lever that is connected to the base block, the lever extending through the yoke and bearing an adjustable cam guide, a yielding base block supported on one end of the lever, a knife holder loosely secured to the carriage by means that permit a sidewise rocking movement of the holder, a lever arm adjustably secured to the end of the knife holder and extendinginto operative engagement with an inclined guide, the inclined guide adjustably secured to the frame, the knife clamp for.
securing a knife to the holder, and the holder socket overlying the base block, all. substantially as described.
3. In a knife grinder in combination, a frame, a reciprocating carriage mounted on the frame, a knife holder loosely secured to the carriage, an adjustable guide engaging a projection on the knife holder whereby a rocking movement is imparted to the latter in the sliding movement of the carriage, and a yielding base block supporting the knife holder below that section of the knife that is being ground, and the knife holder socket in the frame, all substantially as described.
4. In a knife grinder in combination with a grinding surface, a reciprocating knife holder supported at its rear end in a pivot bearing, means for imparting a rocking movement to the knife holder, a yielding base block supporting the knife. in opposition to the grinding surface and the lever in engagement with the reciprocating carriage and the base block, all substantially as described.
