Be it known that I, ROBERT SOHLEIOHER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State ofKentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Manufacturing Boxes, of which the following 1s a specification. Y
My invention relates to machines for manufacturing or assembling boxes, and consists 1n various features hereinafterset forth and claimed.

A indicates the bed or frame of the inachine which, in its preferred construction, comprises a single casting having four equally spaced radial arms A', each of Vwhich is provvided. with a longitudinal j -slot A2.
At the center of the bed or frame, on the under side, is a hub A3, Figs. l and-2, through which extends the shaft or rod B carrying at its upper end the box-head support or sup porting plate C,Figs. 1,'3, 4 and 5,-the
said plate C lying normally upon the upper face 0f the frame or bed A, and held in such position by means of a set screw o passing through the hub and bearing upon the rod B. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, this plate or support C is shown as raised or elevated, in order to more clearly illustrate its form; but it is to beremembered that this is not the position it occupies in use excepting for shallow boxes. Plate or support'C is of course of a vform and size of the box to be made, and is provided with a raised central or body portion b and lateral flanges c, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5; the said body portion fitting y within the sides or walls and serving to support the box-head, which lies iiatly thereon, while the flanges or rim support the upright sides of the box at their lower edges.
The present machine is designed more particularly for the manufacture of that class of boxes in which the head is seated at its edges in grooves in the inner faces of the sides; and as this groove is at a distance from thelower edges of the sides, it is necessary to hold the head at a distance above the lower edges of the sides. For this reason the plate C is provided with a raised body portionh, which is shown in Fig. 5 as supporting the head on in proper position to enter the grooves in the sides y.
The plate or support C will advisably be provided with holes or openings which permit the dirt, dac., to fall therethrough and to avoid the plate adhering to the box-head.
Mounted upon the upper faces of two of the arms A of the bed or frame, are the fixed jaws D and D,whioh are held in anydesired position upon the said arms by lmeans of bolts d which carry at their lower ends a plate e, Figs. 6 and 7, which fits the slot in the arms.
If ione bolt d were used, the said bolt would have merely a head to fit and engage the wider part of the slot, but where two bolts d, are used,and two will be found preferable, as they prevent any lateral play,-it will be found better to connect them by a plate e, as shown. These jaws D D are similar to each other, that is, they each comprisean upright body portion f, horizontal ways g projecting laterally therefrom, and bearing bars h adjustable longitudinally upon the ways and designed to be clamped in their adj usted positions by screws z'. It will be observed, however, that the ways or arms g of the jaw D are shorter than those of the jaw D,and that the said arms or ways g of the jaw D extend inward between those of the jaw D.
The. jaws D and D may be independently adjusted upon their respective arms or supports A.
The movable jawsE and E are similar to each other and to the fixed jaws, each comprising an upright bodyportionf, horizontal y j. arms or ways g, and bearing bars h and their kfastening bolts or screws t'. The jaw E, like the jaw D, has longer arms g than has the jaw E', the short arms g of the latter, as well as ICO of jaw D ,extending between the arms of the Y jaws E, see Figs. 2 and 3.
The jaws E E are provided each with a iianged longitudinal rib j onthe under side,-
Figs. S and 9,-which enters the groove A2 and causes the said jaws to always move in rlght lines toward and from the tixed jaws D and D.
In order to actuate or move the jaws E E', I employ two levers F F, one for each jaw. These levers are pivoted to swing horizontally upon the standards or supports G, which, as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, are bolted or otherwise rigidly athxed iu position upon the bed or frame. In each of the movable jaws, I form a slot k, into which the iunerend of the lever projects, the said inner end of the lever being provlded with a cam slot Z, to receive a pin or stud im carried by the said movable jaw. By swinglng the -levers laterally, the jaws maybe made to move inward or outward as desired.
In making a box with this machine, the head of the box is placed upon the plate orsupport C,and the sides or side pieces are set up vertically upon the flanges or rim of said support, see Fig. 5. The levers F are now swung laterally and the jaws E E moved inward toward the jaws D D,-this inward movement of the jaws causing the tenons and inortises at the edges or corners of the box sides to firmly interlock, and this too without first giving them a start, as has heretofore been custo mary. Not only are the sides or side pieces which are supported by the movable jaws, caused to interlock with those supported by the fixed jaws, but the edges of those supported by the iixed jaws are caused to interlock and the edges of those supported by the movable jaws are also caused to interlock by this inward movement of the jaws E E. At the same time the sides are pressed toward and interlocked with each other the head ot' the box becomes tirmly seated in its groove. By providing the jaws with bearing bars 71 the ten ons at the corners may overlap or extend beyond the sides of the box and be subsequently inished oit'. The plate or support C being of a size to tit within the completed box,pre vents the sides from being moved inward toward each other too far; and by having a series of these plates C, one may be readily replaced by another and will act as a gage to determine the size of the box. Ot course,
when different sized boxes are to be made, the posts or supports G and the fixed jaws will be adjustable upon the frame A as required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The herein described box machine colnprising the following elements in combination, to wit: the frame or bed A, the fixed jaws D D secured thereto; the movable jaws E E mounted to slide upon the bed and provided each with a roller fm; the fixed posts G G; the levers F pivoted to the posts andprovided with cam-slots Z to receive the rollers m; and a stationary plate C to fit within and beneath the sides of the box and thereby support the bottom and sides.
2. In a box machine, the combination with the bed or frame A; of the jaws D D mounted thereon; means forsecuring said jaws rigidly in different adjusted positions upon the bed; the movablev jaws E E and posts G G also mounted upon the bed; means for securing the posts rigidly in their different adjusted positions; independent operating levers for the movable jaws mounted upon the posts; and a fixed bottom-supporting plate also mounted in the bed.
3. In a box machine, the combination with the bed or frame; of two fixed jaws; two movable jaws and their actuating devices; and a fixed plate to fit within and beneath the sides of the box and thereby support the bottom of the box and also the sides thereof.
4:. In a box machine, the combination with a bed or frame; ot jaws mounted thereon; and a plate or support C, provided with a central portion I), and with lateral flanges c below the plane of the top of said central portion, whereby the bottom of the box will be held above the lower edges ot' the sides by the central portion of the plate.
