Beit known that I, MASTIN L. Risen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and usefnlGate, of which the following is aspecication.

The invention relates to improvements in gates.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates, and to provide a simple and inexpensive one, which may be readily opened a distance from it to avoid dismounting or leaving a vehicle, and which may be readily adjusted vertically to clear obstructions, and which when closed cannot be opened by stock.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed ont in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a swinging gate constructed in accordance with this invention, and shown partly open. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the keeper of the latch.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a swinging gate, provided at its bottom with a rearwardly extending re cessed plate 2 forming an open eye 3 to receive detachablyaverticallydisposed pi ntle 4,which is arranged adjacent to a hinge post 5, and which is provided witha vertical series of annular iianges 6 for supporting the plate 2, whereby the gate may be arranged at diiierent elevations.

The gate is provided at its top adjacent to the hinge post with a vertical loop 7 formed on a stem 8 and operating as a keeper to retainthe stem in a slot or opening of a horizontal lever 8, which is fulcrumed on the top of the hinge post, and which is connected with operating ropes 9, extending from the gate in opposite directions. The stem 8 of the vertical loop 7 permits the gate to be adj usted vertically; and in order to prevent hogs or other animals opening the gate a block 11 is arranged on the rear end ot the gate at the bottom thereof above the plate 2 to engage the flange next above it to operate as a stop.

The operating ropes may be provided at their outer ends with any suitable handles, which depend from horizontal arms 12 of uprights 13 located a suitable distance at each side of the gate, which is adapted to swing in either direction.

The gate is provided with a pivoted latch bar 14: adapted to be readily disengaged from a keeper 15 by the operating ropes, or by lifting it upward on its pivot by hand. When the horizontal lever swings in either direction the top of the gate is drawn rearward to lift the latch; and a wedge-shaped block having a tapering'lower end is located above the recess of the keeper. The Wedge-shaped block 16 is adapted toprevent the latch from being operated by stock.

The gate is provided at its bottom with projecting nails to prevent stock from injuring the gate.

It will be readily apparent that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to be readily opened Without dismounting orleaving a vehicle and that it is capable of vertical adjustment.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

1. The combination of a hinge post, a ver tical pintle arranged at the bottom of the same and provided with a series of flanges,a swinging gate having a projecting plate receiving the pintle and adapted to rest upon the {ianges thereof, a stem projecting above the gate,a horizontal lever fulcrumed on the hinge post and having an opening receiving the stem, and 'means for operating the lever, substantially as described.

2. The combination ot a hinge post provided at its lower end with a vertical pintle having a series of iianges arranged at intervals, a swinging gate provided at its top with avertical stem and having at its bottom a projecting plate detachably receiving the pintle and supported by one of the flanges thereot, a roo block mounted on the gate and arranged to engage the ian ges of the pintle to form a stop, and a horizontal lever fulcrumed on the hinge post and receiving said stem, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a hinge post, a vertical pint-le arranged at the base of the same and provided with a vertical series ofy supporting flanges, a gate provided at its lower end with a rearwardly extending plate having a recess, receiving the pintle and resting upon one of the flanges thereof, a vertical loop secured to the top of the gate, ahorizontal le-
