SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,615, dated February 13, 1894.

.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Take-Ups for Gordage-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin adjustable take ups for cordage machines and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 represents an end view of the invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the dide'rent parts of the drawings.
A represents the shaft or spindle of the device which may he journaled in a suitable bearing B and set in a rotary motion by belting, gearing or other suitable mechanism which is however not shown in the drawings.
On the shaft A is secured a hub C provided with a series of radial pins C', C', adapted to enter longitudinal slots D', D', on a conical or tapering take up drum D around Which the cord, dro., E is wound in its passage from the cordage machine to the winding up mechanism.
The drum D is loose on the shaft A and longitudinally adjustable thereon by any suitable mechanism, and I have for this purpose shown the outer end of the shaft A as provided with a screw thread A adapted to receive a nut F preferably provided with a hand Wheel F and loosely journaled on the neck D of the drum D and adapted to turn thereon without moving longitudinally relative .to said drum, there being for this purpose a pin or set screw f on said nut projecting into an annular groove CZ on the said neck D as shown in Fig. 2.
The cord E as it is being drawn onward from the cordage machine, will, as it passes round the drum D be held against the radial pins C', C', and the take up of the cord may easily be regulated by the turning of the nut F which causes thedrum D to move longitudinally relative to the pins O', C', by which the diameter of the place where the cord is Wound upon said drum adjacent to the pins C', C', is increased or decreased more or less according to the amount and velocity of take v up desired.
It will readily be seen that the slotted tapering take up drum is set in a rotary motion by the shaft A and its pins C', C', entering the slots D', D', on said drum.
The device is particularly well adapted for cordage machines but may be equally useful for rope machinery of any kinds, thread, yarn or the like machines as may be desired without departing from the essence of my invention.
Having thus fully described kthe nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claiml. The herein described take up device con sisting of a rotary shaft having a series of radial pins or projections, and a longitudinally adjustable tapering drum arranged on said shaft and having a series of longitudinal slots adapted to receive said radial pins, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

The herein described take up device consisting of a rotary shaft having a series of radial pins or projections, a longitudinally adjustable tapering drum arranged on said shaft and having a series of longitudinal slots adapted to receive said radial pins and means substantially as described for longitudinally adjusting said drum relative to the pins as and for the purpose set forth.
