o. A. JOHNSON.-
PLOW.
No. 514,552. Patented F55. 13, 1894.
' UNITED l STATES PATENT Ormes.
CHARLES A. JOHNSON, OF ll/IOLNE, LLINOIS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 514,552, dated February 13, 1894.
Application led J u1y 11,1893. Serial No. 480,181. (No model.)
ro My attachment is designed to be affixed to that part of a ground plow known as the landside, and its object is to provide a wearing surface, which shall protect the land side from the friction of the earth, and, at the same time, furnish means to regulate the depth to which the plow shall run.
ln the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, wherein the same character of reference refers to the same part zo in the several views, Figure 1, is a side elevation of a plow equipped with my attachment, showing its manner of attachment to the landside. Fig. 2, is a cross section of Fig. l on the line :1sy. Fig. 3, is a plan of the attachment.
Fig. a, is a cross section corresponding to Fig.
2 showing a modified form of my attachment;
and Fig. 5, is a plan of said modified form.
The said attachment consists of the plate B, of steel or other suitable material which fits 3o upon the land-side A, of the plow, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate B is triangularin its general outline, and its apex or point is in front on a level with the lower edge of the landside. The upper edge of the plate slants npward and backward, is drawn out thin, and fits the land-side closely so as to minimize the friction of the earth. The outer, bearing surface of the plate isA polished so that the earth will scour o from it readily. The plate Bis 4o adjusted near the rear extremity of the landside and is provided with a vertical slot c, through which passes the set-bolt C, which holds the attachment in position. The attachment should 'extend at least as far backward as the rear extremity of the land-side. The plate B is provided with the shoulder b, which projects beneath the land-side when the attachment is in position, and forms a foot or shoe for bearing upon the earth beneath. 5o By means of the set-bolt C and the slot c the attachment may be so adjusted as to bring the shoulder b in contact with thelower edge of the land-side, or at any desired distance below it, within the limits imposed by the length ot' the slot c.
When the attachment is so adj usted as to bring the shoulder below the lower edge of the landside by any distance, the eect is to elevate the rear of the plow and depress the point, and cause it thereby to run deeper into the earth. In this manner it is possible to regulate the depth at which the plow is to run by means of this attachment. At the same time,
the attachment is taking upon its bearing surface the friction and wear that would otherwise come upon those portions of the landside which it overlies and covers, and so protects and preserves the plow.
Figs. 4t and 5, show a modified form of the attachment. The wing h' extends outward from the plate B in the direction of the unplowed land, and cuts. under the surface 'so as to enable the plow following to turn a slightly wider furrow. The wing b should be slightly above the level of the lower edge of the foot b.
The vertical adjustment of the plate B, which is secured by the means set forth, might be accomplished in other ways than by means of the slot in the plate, e. g. by means of a slot in the land-side, or by a row of bolt holes in either plate or land-side or both, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
A l am aware that prior to my invention plows have been constructed with vertically adjustable heels, and land sides, and also with vertically adjustable wear plates upon the landsides. I do not claim such device, broadly, for that reason; but I am not aware that such wear plates have been so constructed as to enable them to be attached to any of the ordinary ground-plows now in use without a specially constructed landside for their attachment, or that they have ever, prior to my invention, been of the shape, thinness, and adaptability of my attachment herein described, or that they have been attached with a single bolt and without other attachment by bolt, pivot, hook, or other device whatever.
Having thus described my invention,.what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 2. The combination with the landside of a Patent, isground plow, of a triangular wear plate verl. The attachment to a ground plow detically adjustable, attached thereto, bearing scribed, consisting ot' the triangular plate B, a foot projecting beneath said landside, and 5 vertically adjustable upon the landside of the a horizontal cutting wing b on the opposite 15A plow, and secured thereto by a single bolt, side thereof, as set forth.
Said plate bearing a foot projecting beneath CHARLES A. JOHNSON. the landside and forminga heel thereto; said Vitnesses: plate also bearing a Wing b on the opposite J. W. MORSE,
Io side thereof, as and for the purpose set forth. S. W. SEARLE.
