SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,458, dated February 13, 1894.

Application filed May 10, 1 8 93 To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. HAAS, acitizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Tugs, of which the following is a specification.

The principal objects of my invention are first, to provide a strong, durable, efiicient and comparatively inexpensive thill tug which shall in use present a neat and attractive appearance; and second, to provide a simple and compact interlocking two member thiil tug so arranged as to be held firmly against accidental displacement without the employment of screws, rivets-and the like; and moreover, of such construction as that the members thereof are susceptible of ready and convenient manual detachment and attachment in order to facilitate cleaning, repairing, and removal for other purposes.

My invention consists of a thill tug, comprising two members,whereof one is provided with a buckle-frame with integral flaring end pieces having a central recessed clamp or claw with an oblong slot in the body and a rear terminal, and whereof the other is provided with a cross-bar having a pin seated thereto and adapted to be connected with and disconnected from said claw or clamp by turning one of the members into inoperative or abnormal position.

The nature and characteristic features of myinvention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of a thill tug embodying features of my invention in application. Fig. 2,isa similar view of a buckleframe comprising one member of the fastening device detached from its other member, a shaft supporter or pocket and also showing the recessed clamp orclaw thereof with an oh long slot formed in the face of said frame and with a saddlestrap shown in application thereto; and Fig. 3, is a similar View of a shaft supporter or pocket provided with a transverse cross-bar having a tongue pivoted thereto for entering the oblong slot in the clamp I or claw of the buckle-frame of Fig. 2, and also Serial No. 473.644. (No model.)

for permitting the recessedand slotted clamp or claw to interlock with the cross-bar of the shaft supporter or pocket by turningone of the members of the fastening device into abnormal position and in order to cause the same to then assume the operative position shown in Fig. 1, for use.

Referring to the drawings a, is one member of the fastening device comprisingin this instance a'buckle-frame having flaring end pieces a and a, and a centrally disposed clamp or claw a, provided in the facethereof with an oblong slot (1?, and with a rear curved body a having atransverse terminal a and a recess or slot a formed in the curved wall thereof to form a seat or space for the reception ofthe bearing surface of the tongue of the cross-bar of the other member of the device to be hereinafter fully described.

A fastening device such as described is not only cheap and light, but it presents a neat and attractive appearance in use, in connection with harness.

While this invention has been illustrated in connection with a shaft-supporteror pocket, it may be employed for connecting a buckleframe to other parts of harness, for example, the hames of harness with the traces, by causing the traces to be brought into engagement with the end pieces a, and a, of the frame a, and causing the pivotal tongue 0 of the cross-bar o, to be inserted through the eyes therein. In any case the flaring or other preferred form of skeleton buckle-frame a, may be secured to the cross-bar c, by simply turnin gthe frame a, into inoperative or abnormal position and permitting the pivotal tongue 0 thereof to be inserted first through the slot a and the curved recessed body of the clamp or claw a at the terminal a thereof to be brought into engagement with the cross-bar 0, whereby the same will be caused to interlock with said cross-bar and by then causing the device to assume a normal or operative position as illustrated in Fig.1,the two members of the device will be in position for use. The two parts are firmly held together and at the same time readily detachable from each other by simply withdrawing the strap from its engagement with the tongue and thelower end pieces a, of the framed, and of then causing the member a, of the device to assume again the position illustrated in Fig. 2.

Having thus described the nature and objeots of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A thill-tug,eomprising two members,whereof one is provided with a buckle-frame with integral flaring end pieces having a central transverse recessed clamp or claw with an oblong slot extending through the body thereof and with a rear terminal, and whereof the other is provided with a cross-bar having a pivotal tongue seated thereon and afforded a range of movementin respect to said crossbar adapted to be connected with and disconnected from said claw or clamp by turning one of the members into inoperative position, substantially as shown and described.
