CIGAR-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 514,280, dated February 6, 1894. Application filed May 5, 1893. Serial No. 473,065. (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL SATTELKAU, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide tached to its holder so that it will not accidentally fall out. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side view partly in section of a cigar and holder illustrating my invention. Fig. 2, is a section on the line 1--2, Fig. l. Fig. 3,'is a perspective view of the securing device. Fig. 4, isa side view of the device. Fig. 5, is a sectional view of the holder; and Figs. 6 and 7, are views illustrating a modification of my invention.

ais the socket for the cigar and usually conforms to the shape of the cigar consequently is tapered and no matter how carefully the cigar is forced into the holder the least jar will loosen it and it willV fall out of the holder. In the side walls of the socket a., some distance from the mouth of the socket, I cut or otherwise form a groove I), as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and into this grooveI force the arms d of the securing device D which in the present instance is made of wire, preferably spring wire, so that the arms will give as they are forced into the socket and will spring into the groove b. V

The wire of the device D is so bent for instance as shown in Fig. 3, that three arms d are formed and the ends of the wire are proout into the socket a the prongs are bent apart as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and their ends are beveled so that when the cigar is forced into the holder they penetrate it and tend to separate owing to their shape and thus lock the cigar securely to the holder.

The groove b is preferably a continuou groove so that the fastening device D can turn with the cigar when it is forced into the holder preventing the cigar breaking should It willbe noticed that the prongs of the securing device are so arranged that a central opening is left through which a sharp tool may be readily inserted for discharging the burned cigar or for cleaning the smoke passage.

In Figs. 6 and '7, I have shown the securing device modilied in this instance the part that enters the groove b is made semicircular and the projecting portion'is in the form of a screw, in this arrangement the cigar is turned in the holder and the screw enters the cigar.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination in a cigar holder a socket a groove formed in the side walls of said socket, with a securing device adapted to said groove and having one or more prongs to engage with the cigar, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a cigar holder having a groove in the walls of the socket, with a securing device consisting of a wire bent so as to form two or more spring arms, the ends of the wire forming prongs which engage with the cigar, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of a cigar holder, asecuring device for the cigar removably attached to said holder, said securing device consisting of awire bent so as to form spring arms which engage with the holder leaving a central base opening, for the ready insertion of a discharging or cleaning tool, the ends of the wire forming pointed prongs bent apart, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a cigar holder having a socket, a securing device for the cigar secured to the holder, said securing device provided with two or more prongs extending into the socket, each prong being beveled on one side thereof, the base portion. of said securing device being left open for the ready insertion of a discharging or cleaning tool, substantially as described.
