Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. HEPWORTH, a resident of Yonkers, Westchester county, in the State of New York, have invented cer tain new and usefullmprovements in Gentrifugal Machines for Steaming Sugar, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to theaccompan ying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of a centrifugal machine embodying my invention; section on line 11 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 isasection partly broken away on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of a modified form in which the fan-blades are shown, and Fig. 4 is an under side detail view of the sectional bottom, clearly showing these fan-blades.

My present invention relates to centrifugal machines and has for its object to enable such machines to be used for steaming sugar.

To this end my invention consists in placing an adjustable ring in the curb of the machine, in proximity to the bottom of the basket in order to force the steam to surround and enter the basket. I

In the drawings, A is the curb of the machine provided with a cover B in which there are two openings closed by lids 0. and b. Mounted on the spindle 0 within the curb, is the basket D. The bottom of this basket is formed partly by the annular flanged plate E, partly by the sectional bottom 0 d eriveted thereto, and partly by the Wings fof the valve F, when the latter is-turned to cover the apertures, as shown in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The spindle O is stepped in bearings G, and serves to rotate the basket D. Mounted on the curb ring A is the ring H supported on set-screws h or other analogous devices, so as to be adjustable on the curb ring to and from the bottom of the basket. A rubber ring or other suitable packing g between the ring H and the curb ring renders the joint steam tight. The ring H is designed to prevent the escape of steam from the curb into the central area K, and to force the steam to surround and enter the basket. To this end the ring H is brought up into close proximity to the bottom of the basket, but is never allowed to touch it. This ring Hobviously may be mounted so as to be embraced by the curb ring A.

There is at all times a space of about one quarter of an inch between the top of the ring H and the bottom of the basket. During rapid rotation of the basket, airis forced into the curb from the area K, at a sufficient pressure to prevent the escape of steam between the ring Hand the bottom of the basket. If it be found necessary, fans maybe provided on the rotating parts to keep up this air pressure, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 but for ordinary steam pressures, they will not be required.

Steam is supplied to the apparatus by the supply-pipe S, and together with the sirup and other by-products is exhausted at L.

The basket is filled with masse cuite through the opening at b, and after it has been drained and steamed, the lid a is removed and the sugar is discharged through the bottom of the basket by turning the valve F. During steaming, both lids a and b are in place, and the steam being unable to escape except at L, is forced to surround and enter the basket to effect thorough steaming of the product.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S

. 1. In a centrifugal machine, the combination with an outer casing of means for ad mitting steam to said casing, a basket D, a curb ring A in proximity thereto, and a ring H mounted on the curb ring serving to confine the steam within the curb, and easing, substantially as described.

2. In a centrifugal machine, the combination with an outer casing and means for admitting steam to said casing, of a basket, a curb ring in proximity thereto, and a ring H mounted on the curb ring, and casing, and means outside of the casing for adjusting said first named ring to and from the bottom of the basket, substantially as described.

3. In a centrifugal machine, the combination of an outer casing, means for supplying steam to said casing, a basket, a curb ring in proximity thereto, a ring H mounted on the curbring, and means for adjusting said first means for adjusting said first mentioned ring l0 from outside the casing, and fans mounted on the basket and operating in the area, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
