SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,123, dated February 6, 1894.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLINGTON P. KID-DER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston,in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Safety Dewith the appended drawings and thendefinitely claimed at the end hereof.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a front view of the gates of a freight elevator with the gates closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the gates open. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line sono of Fig. l. Fig. ,l is a similar section on the line y y 'of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of the locking device. Fig. 6 is a front View of a modification with the gates closed. Fig. 7 is asimilar view of the same device with the gates open. Fig. 8 is a plan of the same. Fig. 9 is a side View of the same.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, and more particularly to Figs. l to 5, A represents the well gate, which I prefer to make in two sections as shown, con' neoted by ropes B passing over pulleys C C so that one section' counterbalances the otherthe lower one sinking down even with or just below the level of the floor, as shown in Fig. 2. At the side are bolted two brackets D, supporting two rods E, on which slides a block F, which is made fast in anysuitable manner to the companion or valve controlling rope G, which I prefer to call a controller. On
these brackets D, is pivoted at d, a peculiarly shaped bar or fastener H, provided with a recess or bend h, whose shape is clearly shown at Fig. 5, which bar, being pivoted as described and shown, is capable of swinging sidewise, so as to assume either the position indicated by Figs. l and 3, or that shown in Figs. 2 and 4. y
Each section of the gate is provided with a short 'bar J, which projects into the path of the bend or recess h, as the bar H swings on the pivots cl. p
The operation is as follows: Supposing the sections of the gate to be open as shown in Fig. 2, the block F on the rope will be in the recess h and so the rope or controller cannot be moved sufficiently to start the car, and any attempt to move the bar H will be prevented by the body of said bar H coming in contact with the bars J, so that the car cannot possibly be started while the sections of the gate are in the position shown in Figs. 2
and 4. If now the sections of the gate are closed so as to bring the bars J opposite the recess h, the bar H may readily be swung over the bars J, which will thus securely fasten the gate and at the same time swing away from the block F, thus leaving the rope free to move and start the car as soon as the gate is closed and fastened. When the rope or controller has been moved to start the car, the block F assumes either the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 1 or that in dotted lines in the same ligure, according to the direction the car is moving, and when in either of these positions as it abuts against the body of thev bar H, the latter cannot be moved, and so the sections of the gate are held fast until the car is again made stationary, when the block'F is again opposite the recess h (as in Fig. 2) when the sections of the gate can be readily opened.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 6 and 7, there is an elbow lever K pivoted to each bracketrD,jand the two levers are connected together by a rod L, so as to move simultaneously. Pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the levers is a bar H having a recess h for the same purpose as the recess h in the bar H. lt is obvious that as the bar H moves with the elbow leversK said bar will move sidewise and over the bars J or block F in substan tially the same manner as the bar H in Figs. l to 5. In either of these forms of'my invention, the gate may be made in two sections or in one, as preferred.
I do not intend to limit myself to the de- IOC) vices herein shown, as other modifications may be adopted Without departing from the spirit of my invention. y
1. The combination in an elevator and with the car and the controller thereof, the latter having a projection fast thereon, of a laterally moving bar disconnected from the car and engaging with such projection, and a vercally-movable gate arranged to hold the bar in engagement with the projection on the controller when said gate is open, substantially as described. A
2. The combination in an elevator and with the car and vertically-movable well-gate thereof, of a laterally moving bar, disconnected from the car and engaging with the gate,and a controller provided with a projection arranged to hold the bar in engagement with the Well-gate when the car is in motion, sub stantially as described.
8. The combination in an elevator and with the car and the controller, the latter having a projection thereon, of a laterally-movable bar adapted to engage with the projection on the gate when said gate is closed, and with the projection on the controller when the gate is open, substantially as described.
4.-. The combination in an elevator and with the car, the controller, and the Well-gate thereof, of a bar J mounted on the gate, a block F mounted on the rope, and a laterally moving bar engaging with the block F When the gate is open and with the bar J when the gate is closed, substantially as described.
5. The combination in an elevator and with the car, the valve operating device and the Well-gate thereof, of a bar J mounted on the gate,a block F mounted on the rope, and avi brating pivoted bar I-I having a recess h constructed and arranged to pass over and hold the block F when the gate is open, and the bar J when the gate is closed, substantially as described.
6. The combination in an'elevator and with the well,the car, the operating apparatus,the double gate A and the rope for setting the operating apparatus in motion, of a block F attached to said rope, the bars J on the sections of the gate, and the pivoted barH having the recess h arranged to pass over and hold the bar J when the gate is closed and the block F when the gate is open, substantially as described.
7. The combination in an elevator and with the well, the car, the valve operating device and the Well gate, of the brackets D, the rods E supported by said brackets, the block F sliding on said rods and attached to the valve operating device, a bar J on said well gate, and the bar H having a recess h and pivoted on the brackets D, and cooperating with the bar J and block F, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
