SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,914, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed July 3, 1893. Serial No.479,469. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. GATEWOOD, of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gates,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an automatic gate, operated through means of pull cords that are connected to the inner end of a two-part spring actuated latch, the outer end of which engages with a stop on closing the gate, and the inner end of which when the gate is open, is held by a catch hook, that engages with it, and my invention further relates to an extension on the top, rear end of the gate, to which is secured a cross bar, that carries pulleys over which the pull cords pass.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a side elevation of a gate, in closed position, parts of the gate braces being broken away to illustrate my improvements. Fig. II is a top View or plan of the gate closed. Fig. III is a side elevation of the forward portion of the gate, parts of the gate braces being broken away to show the latching mechanism beneath, the latch being shown in engagement with the limiting stop. Fig. IV is a top view or plan of the gate when open. Fig. V is a side elevation of the gate when open. Fig. VI is an enlarged, detail View, illustrative of .the limiting stop and keeper on the front post.
Referring to the drawings: 1 represents a gate, swinging on hinges 2 on a back post 3.
4: represents the front post on which is secured a limiting stop 5 and keeper 6, said keeper being formed with an opening having vertical sides and a V-shaped notch 7 in the bottomof the opening, into which the outer end'of the latch 8, pivoted at 8, is pressed by the upward pressure of aspring 9, secured to one of the boards or strips of the gate. The latchS is surmounted by the free end of a pivotally secured bar 11, in the outer end of which is a perforation 12 in which are se cured the ends of the pull cords 13 and 13. From the bar 11, the pull cords are'passed up and over the pulleys 14, that have bearing in the vertical strips 15, or between such strips and one of the gate boards. The cords are thence carried over pulleys 16, 'pivotally secured to the outer ends of a cross bar 17, that is in turn secured on an extension 18, connected to the top of the gate. The cords are passed from the pulleys 16 over pulleys 19 that have bearing in brackets 20 on posts 21, which posts may be located at any desired distance from the gate, as it is at them that the free ends of the cords depend, and the said ends are provided with suitable handles by-which the cords may be drawn upon to operate the gate.
22 represents a roller journaled in a bracket 23 on the post 3, and on which the pull cords bear in the operation of opening the gate, and said roller forms, when it is desired to close the gate, a fulcrum by which the amount of pressure required on the pull cord is diminished.
24 represents posts on which are c'atches or hooks 25 that are adapted to engage the latch and hold the gate in open adjustment when the pressure is relieved from the pull cord, the bar 11 dropping into the catch and being held there until released by the pull cord raising its end when said cord is drawn to close the gate.
My improved gate is quite desirable for the reason that when it is desired to pass through with a team, the team can be driven up close 1 to the gate, and as the post on which the pull cord is held, is located some little distance from the gate, brings the driver opposite to and with easy reach of the cord, which he operates by a slight pull down, which relieves the latch from its keeper, and the gate swings away from, instead of toward the team, and is held while he passes through, and until he reaches the end of the cord at the opposite side of the gate, by which he releases the latch from the catch and closes the gate.
When the gate is in closed adjustment, and it is desired to be opened, the operator pulls gently downward on the outer end of one of the pull cords, which raises, through the intermediate mechanism, the end of the bar 11, which movement, owing to the bar being pivoted to the gate, depresses the rear end of the latch, and. at the same time depresses the spring beneath and disengages the outer end of the latch from its keeper, leaving the gate free to swing, which is readily accomplished by continuing the pull upon the pull cord, till the gate has moved back and the bar 11 has passed over the hook catch on the post 21, when the pull cord is relieved and the end of the bar 11 is forced by the spring beneath the latch into engagement with the hook catch, which firmly holds the gate till it is desired to close it; at such time the operator pulls down on the opposite cord to that used in opening the gate, which raises the bar from the hook catch, through the same movement of the latching mechanism as that required in opening, and the gate is closed by a continued pull on the pull cord, which holds the outer end of the latch up until the gate reaches the position shown in Fig. III, at which time the outer end of the latch strikes against the limiting stop on the post, thus arresting the gate from further progress and as it will be seen the point of the latch being directly above its keeper, and the pressure on the pull cord being discontinued, the spring beneath the latch will assume its normal position, and the latch be forced into its keeper.
I claim as my invention-- The combination, with a back post 3, a gate 1 hinged to the back post, and a front post4 having a limiting stop 5, and a keeper 6; of the latch 8 pivoted to the gate, the spring 9, secured to the gate and pressing the inner end of the latch upward, the bar 11 pivoted to the gate, having its outer end bearing on the inner end of the latch, the pulleys 14 journaled on opposite sides of the gate, the extension 18 extending rearwardly from the gate over the back post, the cross-bar 17 secured to the extension, having pulleys 16 journaled thereto, the bracket 23, secured to the rear side of the back post, having a pulley 22, the distance posts 21, having brackets 20 provided with pulleys 19, the ropes 13, 13, extending from the inner end of the pivoted bar, over the gate pulleys, around the crossbar pulleys and alongside the back post pulley and over the pulleys of the distance posts, and the retaining posts 24, having upturned hooks into which the outer end of the pivoted bar falls and from which it is lifted; substantially as described.
