UNITE STATES PHILIP A. COONRADT AND ARTHUR R. OOONRADT, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
PATENT OFFICE.
STREET-RAILWAY BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,888, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed September 8, 1893. Serial No. 485,125. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that we, PHILIP A. COONRADT and ARTHUR R. COONRADT, citizens of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Brushes for Cleaning Street- Railway Tracks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to form a connection between the track cleaning brushes and a suitable lever for raising the brushes, the brushesbeing held to their work by spring action.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is an isometrical skeleton view of the devices forming our invention, in their working position. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of a portion thereof showing the brush elevated.
In the drawings I have only shown such portion of a car as is necessary to show the connections of our improvements.
To the guard board 1, are secured spring bars 2, by clamps 3 held in place by nuts 4. A metallic plate 5, is placed beneath the spring bars to prevent wearing of the guard board. The free end 6, of the spring bars are bent at substantially right angles having its end provided with a perforation 7. A brush 8, has a handle 9, which is placed in contact with the outer face of the bent end of the spring bars, and a clamp 10, surrounds the handle, its ends passing through openings in the end of the spring and nuts 11, clamp the parts together. Pulleys 12, 13 and 14 are supported bya beam 15, and achain 16 passes around the pulley 12, one end being secured to the upturned end of the spring bars, its other end having a connection with a shaft 17, having its upper end provided with a crank 18. A ratchet wheel 19, is secured to the shaft and a dog 20, engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel prevents the unwinding of the chain. A chain 21, has a connection with the remaining brush, and passes around pulleys 13 and 14, having its end connected to the chain 16. By this arrangement both brushes have a flexible connection with the shaft 17, in order that the motorneer can raise them above the rails or allow the force of the spring bars to act to hold them in contact with the rails in working position.
Instead of the spring bars 2, being connected to the guard board they may be connected to the fixed portion of the car truck.
We claim as our invention- The combination of a brush for each rail, a spring bar for each brush having an adjustable connection with a part of the truck,
the brush having an adjustable connection with the bar, a shaft, a flexible connection between one spring bar, and shaft and a flexible connection between the other spring bar and the first mentioned flexible connection passing over suitable pulleys.
