To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN `ADAM and MARTIN O. REHFUSS, citizens of the `United States, both residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have in'- vented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Combining Liquids or` Charging or Fortifying and Combining Fermented and Un'fermented Liquids with Carbonio-Acid Gas, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
Our invention consists of an apparatus for combining liquids or charging or fortifying and combining fermented and unfermented liquids with carbonio acid gas, the same embodying a shell formed with one or more cation with vessels containing the liquid to be combined or charged, and with a source of supply of carbonic acid gas when used.

Referring to the drawingz-A designates a shell of the apparatus, concentric or telescopic within which is a tube B, the latter inclosing a tube C, the inner ends of said tubes being conical. Between the shellA and tube B, is a chamber D. Between the tube B and tube C is a chamber E. On the shell A is a branch F, which leads to the chamber D, and has connected with it the pipe F', shown in dotted lines. On the shell A is also the branch G, which leads to a port H in the shell B, said port leading into the chamber E. Connectedwith said branch Gis a pipe G', shown in dotted lines. Encircling the end of the tube B is a tubular plug J, whose bore K is in communication with the chambers D and E, and with the bore L of the tube C, said plug being continuous of or connected with the shell A. Surrounding said plug J and secured thereto is a nozzle M, between which and the plug J is a chamber N, said plug being of conical form, and having opposite to its discharge end the head P, which is connected with the screw stem Q, the latter being fitted to the wall of the nozzle M,'and adapted to be moved in and out, and thereby adjust the head P to the seat of the plug J,

l, It will be Iunderstood that the pipes R', F', The drawing represents a longitudinal secl U', are connected with vessels containing the liquid to be charged, and the pipe G is connected with a cylinder or tank containing carbonic acid gas, it being evident that the liquid and gas may be directed into the respective chambers, so that the liquid will be charged by the gas, the liquid as charged,be ingsprayed into the liquidi entering the nozzle M, by the chamber N, from whence it may vbe pumped or discharged from the pipe T into the pipe T2, and reconveyed to one of the vessels, the several vessels being in communication, and the pipes thereof provided with cocks or valves.
A specific operation of the apparatus for the purpose of charging or fortifying and combining fermented and unfermented liquids with carbonic acid gas is set forth in an application for Letters Patent filed by us on the 3d day of December, 1892, Serial No. 453,945.
In order to adjust the parts of the apparatus, the tube B is connected withV the shell A by screw-threads V, and the tubes B and C are connected by screw-threads V', so that said tubes may be moved in and out by rotating the same, and thus their discharge ends may be set nearer to or from each other, and to and from the bore of the plug J, thus regulating the iow of the liquid and gas through the apparatus. To the end of the shell there IOO is fitted a nut W, which engages with said end and encircles the tube B, and to the end of the latter there is fitted a nut W', which encircles the tube C, they being used as stuing boxes. The tube B is provided with a Wheel X for the purpose of rotating the same. The tube C passes through the nut `W, and is connected with a nut Y, which is provided with a hand Wheel Y and screw-threaded for connection with a swiveled sleeve or coupling Z, which latter encircles the tube section Z', which constitutes a continuation of the tube C, and has the branch U connected with it.
It will be understood, that by our apparatus, we are enabled to combine one or more liquids with each other, and may multiply the number of tubes and chambers within the shell, the object being essentially to simultaneously combine liquid or gas with liquid, so as to be highly charged and immediately distributing the same with a passing stream of liquid by spraying the highly charged liquid into said passing stream.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The shell A, and the pipes Band C therein, with the intervening chambers D and E, the branches F and G on `the shell communicating with said chambers D E respectively and, the pipe U connected with the pipe C, in combination with the tubular plugJ which is connected with the shell at the discharge end of the pipes B and C, and has a chamber N between the same and the discharge nozzle M of said shell, andthe branch R, connected with said nozzle, and communicating with said chamber N, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for the purpose named, the shell having the tubes B and C therein,
with intervening chambers D and E'having respectively inlet branches, means substantially as described for adjusting said pipes in said shell, an inlet pipe for said pipe C, the plug J on the front end of said shell, a discharge nozzle secured to said shell forming a chamber surrounding said plug, and a valve for said plug having its stem in said nozzle, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus substantially as described, the shell A with pipes B and C, and the tubular plug J therein means for adjusting said pipes relatively to the discharge end thereof and to said plug, a nozzle connected with the discharge end of the shell, and a valve in said nozzle, the seat of the same being in the discharge end of said plug, substantially as described.
4. An apparatus for the purpose described consisting of the shell A, the pipes B and C therein, means for adj usting said pipes at their discharge ends, the tubular plug J at the discharge end of the shell, the chamber E between the pipes B and C, the chamber D between the pipe B and plug J, the discharge nozzle M, With a valve thereon, the chamber N between said plug and nozzle, the valve P in said nozzle, and the branches G and F connected with said chambers E and D, the branch R on the nozzle M, leading into said chamber N, and the pipe U connected with the pipe C,said parts being combined substantially as set forth.
