SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,841, dated January 30, 1894. Application filed May 8,1893. Serial No. 473,426. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE TOLMIE, of Carbon, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tents, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in tents, and especially to a means for closing the door or doors of a tent and for covering-the surface over which the tent is erected.

The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the door or doors of the tent may be closed from the inside of the tent in such manner as to completely cover the door opening, and whereby also the closing device may be opened out in such manner as to disclose the entire door opening, the closing device when not in use being not at all in. the way.

Another feature of the invention is to pro-. vide a door-closing device which will be a fixture upon the tent, and likewise to provide a bottom or flooring for the tent which may be connected and is preferably connected with the doorclosing section thereof. Thus a means is obtained whereby animals, insects or reptiles will be prevented from entering the tent and at the same time the occupants may have ready egress therefrom.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a portion of this specifica tion, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tent having the improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the front section of the tent and of the improvement, the door-closing device being shown in its closed position in Fig. 2 and in its open position in Fig. 1.

In carrying out the invention the door-closing device comprises a strip 10, of canvas or other approved material, which strip is made preferably of rectangular shape, being of much greater length than width. One side edge of the strip is secured along the side wall 11 of the tent door 12, the closing strip top to bottom of being made to extend from 'ginal portion the door and along the threshold portion thereof, at which point it may be secured in any suitable or approved manner; but preferablythe closing strip is attached to or is made an integral portion of a flooring strip 13 of canvas or like material, which is adapted to fit to the interior shape of-the tent and to extend over the ground, or over the surface upon which the tent is erected. The marof the flooring strip 13, is preferably provided with a stiffening hem 14, or it may be stiffenedin any approved manner, or the stiffened margin may be omitted if in practice it is found desirable. A cord 15, is attached to each end of the closing strip 10, as near as practicable to its outer side edge, as shown best in Fig. 1, and these cords are preferablypassed through loops or rings 16, or equivalent devices, located one at each side of the door opening and near the side of the tent, as shown in both Figs. 1 and 2; and the cords or ropes are passed in direction of the center of the door opening from the rings or loops 16, and through the canvas into the interior of the tent, eyeleted openings 18, being produced in the canvas of the tent for that purpose, adjacent to the upper portion of the sides of the door opening. The door may be provided with the usual flaps 19, or said flaps may be omitted.

In the operation of the improvement, when frequent access to the tent is desired, as during the day time for example, the door-covering strip is carried downward out of the way, a portion of it resting upon the ground and forming a mat in front of the door, while the end portions are festooned at each side of the door, as shown in Fig. 1. After the occupant has entered the tent, and is about, for example to retire for the night, by drawing upon the cords 15 extending within the tent, the free corners of the door-closing strip will be carried upward, the strip folding upon itself at its ends, and the outer side edge is continued to be drawn upon until it extends transversely across the tent above the door opening, as shown in Fig. 2.

In order that rain shall not beat in at the top of the door-closing strip, a cover strip 20, is secured to the outer face of the tent, which cover strip extends over the door opening,

and the door closing strip when pulled up is carried beneath the cover strip. It will be observed that by reason of the floor covering and the door closing strip the occupant of the tent will be efiectually protected from the weather as well as from insects, animals or reptiles.

The attachment is exceedingly simple and is applicable to any tent. If in practice it is found desirable, ventilators of any description may be placed in the ends of the tent, and when used may consist of a wire net placed in a suitable frame, and a curtain is provided for one side'of the ventilators, to be secured by buttons or other form of fastening device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a tent, of a door closing strip extending across the threshold of the door opening and secured to the side portions of the said door opening, and means for holding the said strip folded up over the door opening, substantially as described.

2. In a tent, adoor-closing strip extending across the threshold portion of the door openportions of the ing and attached to the side said door opening, the ends and outer side of the strip being free, and cords attached to the outer end portions of the strip, WhlCh cords are accessible from the interior of the bent and are adapted to fold the closing strlp upward over the door opening, as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a tent, a door-closing strip extending across the threshold portion thereof and attached to the sides of the door opening, devices for elevating the free edges of the closing strip, thereby covering the door opening, and a cover strip or shield beneath which the elevated edges of the closing strip are contained when elevated, as and for the purpose specified.

4:. In a tent, a door-closing strip extending across the threshold of the door of the tent and attached at the sides of the door opening, means for carrying the strip upward over the door opening, and a flooring strip connected with the threshold portion of the closln g strip, as and for the purpose set forth.
