LABELING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,784, dated January 30, 1894. v

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK IIAsBRoUoK, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Labeling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto an improvement in labeling machines and more particularly to machines for applying a flexible label to the curved or angular surface of av bottle or package.
My invention contemplates mechanism for conveying the flexible label, supplied with suitable adhesive material, into engagement with the curved or angular surface of the article to which the label is to be applied while the article is itself temporarily held in the proper position, and so wrapping the label about the surface of the article as to cause it to adhere thereto throughout its entire extent.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a view of the machine in front elevati0n,showing the bottle in position to be labeled and the label support in its lowered adjustment in position to receive the label which is to be applied to the bottle. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation, showing the label support elevated and pressing the label into contact with the bottle. Fig. 3 is a view of the same in side elevation, showing in dotted lines the position of the label support and its operating mechanism when the latter is lowered, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the machine, showing the parts in the position represented in Fig. 1.
A represents a table. of any well known or approved form, here shown as supported upon legs a, each two side legs being connected by a brace a which braces serve as bearings for a rocking crank shaft B for operating the label support and applying device.
For holding the bottle or other article or package to be labeled in position, I provide the table A with an uprising back or standard G, which, in case it is to hold a bottle--as in the present instance, I provide with a forwardly projecting top 0 having a recess 0' formed therein for the reception of the neck of the bottle when the latter stands on the table A in position to receive the label. The bottle is denoted in the present instance by D. When in position to receive the label, the holder stands in an upright position in front of the operator. To the base of the standard or back 0 there is hinged a swinging frame E which is cut away centrally, shown at e, to receive the side of the bottle therethrough and at its top it is provided with a recessor with a curved central portion 6' to receive the neck of the bottle so as to permit the frame itself to be swung up into a position such that the sides of the frame will lie upon opposite sides of the bottle. One or more elastic straps F, preferably several, as here shown, are stretched across the frame E from side to side, their ends being secured to the sides of the frame. The label, denoted by G, is placed flatly upon the strap or straps F when the frameE is in its lowered position,as shown in Fig. l, and may be adjusted and held temporarily in the proper position by hooks or lips .e which project from the frame work E over the edges of the label thereon.
A link H connects the frame work E, preferably its free end as shown, with a crank 19 on the shaftB and asecond crank 12' on said shaft is connected by a rod 1' with a foot pedal I. A spring K tends to hold the pedal normally lifted and the shaft B rocked in a position, 7
shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Fig. 1, with the label support in horizontal position ready to receive the label.
In operation, supposing a bottle or other article'to be labeled to be placed in position as shown in Fig. 1 and the label to be placed in position upon the swinging frame E. By pressing downwardly upon the pedal I, the shaft B will be rocked in a direction to throw the frame E with the label thereon upwardly into contact with the bottle or other package, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and, as the frame presses upon opposite sides of the bottle or package, the elastic strap or straps F will spread the label gradually, from its center toward its opposite sides, onto the rounded or angular face of the package and in so doing will withdraw the label from the holding lips 6 so that when the pedal I is released, the
parts will return freely to their position to receive another label Without interfering with the label already placed upon the package.
The machine is a very simple one and can be manufactured at a low cost.
It is obvious that numerous slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein shown, but
What I claim is 1. The labeling machine comprisinga holder to resist lateral pressure on the article to be labeled, a movable frame adapted to partially embrace the article and mounted to move bodily toward and away from the bottle on the side opposite the holder, an elastic label support connected with the frame and means for operating the movable frame to convey the label into contact with the article to be labeled, substantially as set forth.
2. The labeling machine comprising a holder to resist lateral pressure on the article to be labeled, a swinging frame adapted to partially embrace the article and hinged to swing bodily toward and away from the bottle on the side opposite the holder, an elastic support stretched across the frame and forminga support for the label to be applied,a rock shaft, a connection between the rock shaft and the swinging frame and means for operating the rock shaft, substantially as set forth.
3. Thelabeling machine comprisingaholder for the article to be labeled, a swinging frame adapted to partially embrace the article to be labeled, an elastic label support stretched across the frame, label retaining lips secured to the frame, a crank shaft, a connection between the crank shaft and the swinging frame, and shaft operating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
