PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,760, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed October '7, 1893. Serial No. 487,456. (No model.)
erence being had to the accompanying drawings,-forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals and letters of reference marked thereon.
My-present invention has for its object to provide an improved collapsible paper-box or carton adapted for holding merchandise of various kinds, or bottles containing medicines or the like, and it consists in certain improvements in construction and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of this specification. I
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the first stage of folding one end; Fig.3, a similar-view of another stage; Fig. 4:, a perspective view showing the manner of folding the other end of the box or carton; Fig. 5, a view of a modification.
Similar reference numerals and letters of reference in the several figures indicate similar parts.
In making boxes or cartons, it is oftentimes desirable to provide them at one end with a tight closure, which may be secured by pasting down a single covering flap forming one end of the box, while the other end is capable of being secured and covered by a label lar material, the full lines indicating the places where the blank is out, and the dotted lines where it is scored or indented in such manner that it may be readily folded. The blank is preferably-divided by the scored lines 3, 4 and 5 into the panels a, b, c, and d, the panel at having a short securing strip e attached thereto, as shown. The blank is further scored on the lines 1 and 2 indicating the top and bottom of the box or carton when set up, and at the end of the panel a is formed a broad covering flap'a; at the end of b, the flap b is formed with the tongue 6 and scored to form a triangular panel 7; at the end of the panel a is formed the flap c scored to form the triangular panels 8 and 9, and at the one end of the panel 01 is a flap d scored to form the triangular panel 10, said flap d being also provided with a cut tongue 11; these parts forming the closure for the end of the box, which is adapted to be sealed when the box is setup.
In order to set up the box, the blank is bent onthe lines 3, 4 and 5, the panel 01 and strip e are pasted together, as is usual in this classof devices, and then in order to secure the end just described, the triangular panels or gores ,7, 8, 9 and 10 are bent inward, as shown in Fig. 2, and closed down, bending the flaps 0, cl, first, and then the flap b and inserting the tongue 6 on the latter into the aperture in the flap 61' formed by cutting the tongue 11 therein, as shown in Fig. 3. This will leave the broad flap a standing, and the flaps b, c, and (1 will constitute a flat surface to which paste or glue may be applied, and then the flap a. may be turned down and secured thereto making a' secure and fiat fastening, as will be understood, and the flat surface formed by these flaps b, o, and (1' will afiord a secure holding ground for the flap a.
' Instead of cutting the tongue 11 in the flap d, it will be understood that a single slit would answer the purpose, although this would render it more difficultto enter the tongue 6 in it, and I therefore prefer the construction shown.
Although this box is adapted, as stated, to have one end closed by a separate label at the other end from the one described, it will be understood that the fastening just described could be applied to either or both ends, if desired. In the preferred form, however, in which the fastening label is employed and a tight closure is not desired at the other end, the blank is constructed and the closure formed as in Figs. 1 and 4, the
panels a and-c being provided at one-end with the flaps or, and 0 both similarly constructed with tongues 12 formed by slitting the material, as shown, and the panels 1) and d are provided with flaps b and d each of which is cut so as to form tongues 13, which, however, are only for the purpose of providing slits for the accommodation of the tongues 12 on the flaps a, and c. In closing this end of the box the flaps b and d are first folded down, as indicated in Fig. 4, and then, the fiapsa and c are folded over upon tliem and the tongues 12 inserted in, the slits formed in; cutting the tongues 13. This form of fasteningis-not sufliciently tight for packagesofv pulverulent material, but might be used for packages containing bottles or similar ar-v ticles and could be used, vof course, without employingthe form of closure shown at the other endof the box, but is-well adapted to a form of box which it is desired to close at one or both ends, with a label or covering one'that is separate, sothat a better closure isfonrnedand one less liable to permit the escape of a pulverulent material than a closure employing separate flaps, also that the flaps b, of and d" are supported in a measure by the gores7, 8,. 9 and 10, thereby allowing the I flap a to be more securely fastened.v It will also be understood that the upper part of the flap 1) containing the tongue 6 could be dispensed with, if desired, and the-flap I) made the same height as the flaps c and d, and when this form is used a flat surface for the securing of the broad flap a would be obtained without the necessity of performing a tongue-and-slitlockingoperation, all as shown in Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein described closure for folding boxes embodying the flaps b, o, and d scored to form panels 7, 8, 9 and 10, the interlocking tongue and slot connections between flaps b and d, and the separate whole flap a, ar-
ranged and operating substantially as described.
2. A blank forfoldingbQXQS having-the, panels a, 12, 0,01 and a. connecting. flapandalso having, flaps a, b5, 0-, anddflthe three latter panels 7, 8, 9 and lO, intenloekingtongues and slits between the flaps bf and d, and short flaps (1?, b 0 d at the other,- end of the blank having interlocking tongues-and slots;12,and 13, substantially asdescribed.
at. The herein describedclosureforfolding boxesembqdying the flaps b.',c' and d, scored to formpanels7, 8, 9 and 10,: and the flap a broader than the other flaps, and. adapted to cover, them all, when folded-,substantially as shown and described.
