UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. NOYE, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
QBRICK-KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,719, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed September 4, 1893. Serial No. 484,714. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WlLLIAM H. NoYE, a
citizen of the United States, anda resident of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster, and in the State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Kilns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its main object to economize fuel and obtain a more even burn of bricks than is ordinarily the case in kilns of the usual construction, and a further object of said invention is to provide for access to the base flues without removal of the kiln floors, these objects being attained by the peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of a brick kiln embodying my improvements, the section being taken on line 1-1 of the succeeding figure; Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the bottom of a brick-kiln divided by suitable longitudinal and transverse walls B into a series of sections, and each of the latter has a flue C that is open on a level with the kiln-bottom and in communication with a chimney D, of suitable height. ,Each chimney is provided with a normally covered manhole E through which access may be had to the relative flue without removal of any of the flooring hereinafter specified, this being one of the features of my improvements. I also provide each chimney with a damper F controlled by any suitable means.
As'herein shown I prefer hinged dampers each of which has a curved handle G that works in a suitable opening in the relative chimney and is provided with a series of perforations for engagement with a locking pin H passed through parallel ears I on the outside of said chimney, whereby the dampeimay be held in various adjustments intermediate of a full open or closed position.
Arranged at suitable intervals on each section of the kiln-bottom is a series of cross walls J, and each of the latter is provided with a number of arches, the center one of which is immediately over the adjacent flue. The side arches improve the circulation of heat and the cross-Walls serve as supports for a flooring heroin shown as being a series of metal bars K laid at regular intervals apart, but said 'flooring may be of any suitable material and construction so long as provision is made therein for the circulation of heat.
The outer walls, arch-roof stays and fireboxes of the kiln are of such construction and relative arrangement as is common in the art.
The heat from the fire-boxes enters the kiln through usual passages in the outer walls and goes up over and comes down through the brick to pass out through the bottom-fines and chimneys above specified. By means of the dampers in the chimneys, the draft can be controlled at will to thu s regulate the circulation of heat in the kiln, it being possible to throw the entire heat to any one section of said kiln by closing all but one of said dampers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Y A brick-kiln bottom divided into a series of sections each of which has a flue open on a level with said bottom, cross-walls arranged at suitable intervals on each section of the kiln bottom and individually provided with arches the center one of which is immediately over an adjacent flue, a suitable flooring supported on the cross-walls, and a series of damper-controlled chimneys each of which communicates with one of said Hues, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set myjhand, at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. NOYE.
