SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,715, dated January 30, I894.
ApplicationfiledIebruary 4:, 1893. Serial No. 461,013. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BYRQN O. MCCOY, of Suisun City, in the county of Solano and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Gates; and t I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has special reference to an improvement in that class of swinging gates which are provided with hand opening mechanism, or means by which the gate may be operated, to open or close, by the driver of a team without dismounting from his seat, and my object is to provide superior means for holding the gate in the desired position, either closed or opened. j
A further object is to constructa gate which may be easily manipulated and one which is noiseless in operation.
To these ends my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention in operative position; Fig. 2 a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective view of the device by which the gate is held in the desired position.
The reference letter a, indicates the main post to which the gate 1) is hinged, and 0, its companion, or the one to which the .gate is fastened when closed. It is necessary to the perfect operation of .my invention that the hinge by which the gate is attached to post a, should be of such a construction as to allow a slight vertical movement of the-gate. The purpose of this construction will fully appear hereinafter. As hinges of this class are common, no further description thereof is deemed necessary. Two auxiliary posts d and d are located on either side of the post a, and serve the two-fold purpose of helping to hold the gate open and supporting the bell-crank le- Vers e and e by which the gate is operated. These levers may be of any preferred construction, and are fulcrumed to the upper ends of the posts at and 01 respectively. Formed with or secured to the lower end of the shaft is is a second crank Z, having also a headed wrist pin which is received by an elongated slot on of the rod m. The rod 0%, is located between the horizontal bars of the gate and extends parallel therewith, the entire length of the gate. Pivotally attached to its remaining end m is the gate latch n, which operates in a horizontally extending passage in the gate frame, and if preferred may be provided with a spring to keep it normally engaged with its catch. This, however, is not deemed essential.
Formed in the post a, and in the posts d and d are the usual openings 0, adapted to receive and hold the latch 07., until withdrawn by the latch operating mechanism. H
Securely fastened to the base of the post a, by means of screws or bolts passing through openings in the straight portions 19, is a ridged metallic strip 10. Shown in detail by Fig. 3. The strip p, is so bent that a substantially semi-circular track or way, having three depressions q, q, and q, and two raised portions, g is formed, the raised portions occurring between the depressions and serving to distinguish them from each other. This device is securely fastened, to the front of post a, in such a manner that the depression q will occur in a line with that post and the post a. Rigidly secured to the lower end of the vertical portion r, of the gate, by means of the frame 0'', is a roller or carrying wheel S, adapted to engage the track q, and travel thereon as the gate is operated. When the gate is closed this roller rests in the depression (1, such position being its normal one.
By reference to the drawings the operation of my invention may be traced as follows: Supposing that the gate is in the position shown by Fig. 1, and that a team approaching from the right desires to pass, all that is required of the operator is to pull on the hand cords 15, depending from the normally horizontal arm of lever e. Thereupon the lever 72., will be swung on its fulcrum and through the medium of crankj, will revolve the shaft 7a. This is followed by a slight longitudinal movement of the rod m, which in turn withdraws the latch n, and puts the gate in position to be swung open. Then this stageis reached, the crank j has moved around at right angles to its normal position and for obvious reasons can be moved no farther, but the lever h, continues to move, whereupon the gate itself is swung open, in a direction corresponding with that of the approaching team. Simultaneous with this operation, the roller 3 moves in a semi-circle upon the track, q, first mounting the raised portion (1 and atterward sinking into the depression q to the left, the whole gate moving vertically in unison with the vertical movements of the roller. When this position is attained the gate has swung to the limit of its outward movement, and the latch n, engages the catch 0, provided for it on thepost a, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to close the gate, the foregoing operation is reversed, by pulling on the lever e, at which the parts will assume their normal position. It will be seen from the above dewith gates of this class.
that the use of my invention is not limited to farm or road gates, but that it is capable of a much wider use, for it is obvious that it could be applied to lawn and garden gates as well. It will also be readily seen that the strip 19 can be placed at the center of the post and the rollers at a corresponding position on the gate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a swinging gate, the combination with the latch and gate operating mechanism, of a track secured to the lower end of the hinge post of semicircular form having three depressions q, q, q, and two raised portions (1 located between the depressions, and a roller or carrying wheel S secured to the under side of the adjacent upright of the gate and adapted to engage the track and travel thereover, each of the said depressions being in the same plane or on a level with the other, and the said track having two straight portions 19', p, for securing the same to the post, the track being composed of metal that is bent into the shape set forth and having one of the depressions g at the center of the outer portion thereof, substantially as described.
