A... HESSELSi TRUSS.
No; 513,681. Patented Jan. 30, 1894.
INVENTOH Q WW ziTTOHNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY HESSELS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 3,681, dated January 30, 1 894.
Application filed April '7, 1893. Serial No.469,451. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
1 3e it known that I, ANTHONY HEssELs, a cltlzen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses for Ru ptures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention' relates to an improved truss for ruptures, by which an easily fitting and yielding pad is provided for the ruptured portion whatever be the position of the body, and whether the body is in a sitting or walking position and the invention consists of a truss for ruptures, in which the pad is connected with a curved front-arm of the truss by a twopivotconnection, so that it adjusts itself readily to the difierent positions of the body in sitting or walking, one pivot turning in bearings of the curved arm of the truss so as to provide for the vertical oscillation of the pad, while the second pivot connects an eye on the first pivot with ears at the rear-plate of the pad, so as to permit the horizontal oscillations of the pad. The motion of the pad, both in vertical and horizontal directions, is arrested by suitable stops, so that the motion of the pad is confined within certain limits. The face of the pad is of felt and a layer of ribbed rubber, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved truss. Fig. 2 is a top-view of the pad of the same and its connection with; the front part of the truss, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting spring of my improved truss, which is provided at its front end with a curved arm a, into an opening of which is supported a pivot I) having a threaded outer end I) and an eye-shaped inner end W. The end of the curved arm a is provided with a bracket a, which extends at right-angles to 1 the curved arm a. The eye-shaped inner end b of the pivot 12 is again pivoted by a pin (1 to ears (1 of the rear-plate D of the pad D, said rear-plate being made slightly concave and providedwith a layer of felt e and afacelayer e of a suitably ribbed soft rubber, as
shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By the double pivotal connection of the pad D with the arm a a certain degree of motion is imparted to the pad D, both in a vertical and a horizontal direction, so that the pad may follow the motion of the body in rising or sitting or in ascending a stair-case, or in assuming a stooping or erect position. The oscillating motion of the pad D in a vertical direction is arrested by the contact of the rear-plate with the bracket a, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in horizontal direction by the contact of the ears d with a shoulder b of the pivot-pin b, so that the play of the pad is confined to a certain motion in either direction.
My improved pad has the advantages, in the first place, that it fits easily to the ruptured part; secondly, that there is a certain play in the pad, so that it can readily follow the motion of the body; and, thirdly, that a comfortably fitting and very elfective truss is obtained, which can be worn with great comfort on the body and which exerts thereby a healing influence on the ruptured portions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the curved frontarm of a truss-spring, of a pad, having ears, a pivot for connecting said ears to a second pivot which is supported in bearings of the arm of the truss-spring, and means for arresting the oscillating motion of the pad in vertical and horizontal direction, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the curved frontarm of a truss-spring, said arm having a bracket-stop bent at right-angles to the arm, a pad provided with cars, a pivot connecting said ears with the eye-shaped end of a second pivot which is applied to the end of the arm below the bracket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANTHONY HESSELS.
Witnesses PAUL GoEPnL, CHARLES SOHROEDER.
