J. M. LEAVER. PACKING GHIMNEYS FOR SHIPMENT.
PatentedJan. 30, 1894-. Fig.1.
STATES JAMES MARSHALL LEAVER, or BAY CITY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF CNE- HALF TO EMERY J. VANCE, OF sAME PLACE.
PA CKIN G CHIMNEYS FOR SHIPMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,644, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filedDeoember 23, 1592. Serial No. 456,162. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, JAMES MARSHALL LEA- VER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Method of Packing Chimneys for Shipment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in packing chimneys for shipment.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the necessity of packing chimneys in hay, straw, and the like and avoid the dirt and litter incident to such mode of packing, and to provide means for affording a safe transit for these fragile articles.
It is also an object of the invention to enable chimneys to be nested with safety in packing and thereby enable a much greater number of chimneys to be packed in the given space than could be were they not nested.
The invention consists in the construction and novel. combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a sectional view of a box showing chimneys packed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a cushioning chimney support constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the blank before folding.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a rectangular chimney support constructed of paper or other suitable material and provided with a central circular opening 2, adapted to receive the contracting top of a chimney 3 and to rest at the edges of the opening against the bulging portion or swell of the chimney. The stock or material removed to form the central opening 2 is divided by radial cuts into a circularseries of tapering tongues et adapted to be interposed between the inner face of the base or bottom of a chimney and the outer face of the contracted upper portion of a nested chimney inserted in said base or bottom, whereby chimneys may be with safety nested to enable them'to be packed with great compactness.
The tapering tongues, by being interposed between the contiguous portions of nested chimneys, prevent actual contact of the glass andhold the chimneys against movement on one another and cushion the same.
The blank illustratedin Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings is folded at the four corners to form a rectangular box-like support, composed of an end and four sides, the Sides 5 of which are resilient, are adapted to bear against the sides of other supports or the sides of the inclosing receptacle, andare adapted to bear the weight of the chimneys, thereby preventing the weight of the chimneys above being supported by those below and obviating all liability of the chimneys breaking.
In packing the chimneys the nested rows are preferably reversed; and the end supports are provided with extensions Gadapted to extend along the end chimneys and around the outer ends of the same to be interposed between the chimneys and the inclosing receptacle. The intermediate supports, or those at the points of nesting, are arranged one above another and occur in regular series, so that in a receptacle substantially mosaic supporting partitions or diaphragms are formed at intervals to support and cushion the chimneys.
The method of packing herein shown and described materially reduces the size and weight of a package, and eflects a considerable saving in freight, besides attaining the other desirable and advantageous results heretofore mentioned.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as the form of the rectangular supports might be constructed of other polygonal shapes.
What I claim is 1. A chimney support composed of an end and resilient cushioning sides adaptedto bear against the sides of similar supports having at its end a chimney opening and provided with a circular series of tapering tongues designed to be interposed between the nested portions of chimneys, whereby chimneys may be nested without actual contact, and rows of chimneys may be packed without chimneys of one row coming in contact with those of another row, substantially as described.
2. A rectangular chimney support having a central circular chimney receiving opening and designed to be arranged at the nested portions of chimneys and in packing to relieve the weight of chimneys above from those below, and composed of an end and resilient cushioning sides adapted to bear against the sides of similar supports substantially as described.
3. A rectangular chimney support having a central opening and provided thereat with a circular series of tapering tongues, and composed of an end and resilient cushioning sides adapted to fit against the sides of similar supports substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A rectangular chimney support having a central opening and provided with a circular series of tongues and having an extension, and composed of an end and resilient cushioning sides adapted to fit against the sides of similar supports substantially as described.
5. A rectangular box line chimney support constructed of a rectangular piece of material folded at the corners to form an end and four resilient sides and provided at the center with a circular opening and having the stock or material from the opening radially severed to form tapering tongues, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MARSHALL LEAVER.
