VOTINGfBOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,569, dated January 30, 1894.
Application ned August 4, 1892. sean No. 442,195. en more.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that we, CARL B. GRAHL and HARRY l-l. GRAHL, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Voting-Booths; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in theart to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel collapsible voting booth.
The object of this invention is, to provide a voting booth that shall be portable, simple of construction and readily adjustable; and in furtherance of this object, ourinvention consists in a collapsible voting booth, comprising three or more similar panel sections, which may be readily adjusted to form a booth, as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l shows a front elevation of a three stall voting booth embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof; Fig. 3 a central sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail with parts broken away showing the arrangement of the hook and loop, while Fig.'5 shows atop in section, of Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts.
Our invention relates more particularly to that class of booths, which are intended to be set up and used in halls, stores and school rooms, and comprise moreessentially, a series of similar panels, consisting of a rectangular skeleton frame of wood, comprising the two supporting standards A A, and the transverse braces c', a. The standardsA A which are of suitable height are connected and secured by'rneans of the transverse braces a. The upper brace a is ilush with the top of the supporting standards A, the intermediate one preferably waist high, while the lower brace is secured a suitable distance from the Secured to this rectangular frame work is the screen A', of a woven fabric such as canvas or cotton, or if desired flat or corrugated iron sheet metal plates may be secured to the frame. One of the standards A, is now provided near the top and bottom upon the face or screen side with a projecting hook B of any suitable size and material, and secured by means of screws or bolts, as will be noticed in referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 5. Upon the same side but secured to the opposite standard A and the width of the hook B, below the lower edge of said hook, are now secured the approximately rectangular supporting loops C of any suitable metal so that each panel has two loops upon one edge and two loops upon the other. As more clearly shown in Fig. 5, this loop comprises a three sided rectangular band, of strap or cast metal, the central section cof which in length equals the thickness of the standards A, as shown in figure. The section c opposite and extending in like direction,is curved inward and then forward so th at when the loop is secured, there is formed a loop projecting outward from the face of the panel, which is adapted to hold and snugly accommodate the nosing of one of the hooks B of an adjoining panel, as shown. In securing the loops, the straight portion c" is inlaid, whilethe central section c is also flush with the edge of the supporting standards A. But so as to further accommodate a second hook adapted to engage portion c adjoining the central bar c as shown in Fig. 5, a small portion of the standard A is removed so as to form a recess permitting the insertion and removal of the hook, as is more clearlyshown in Fig. 4. The central transverse brace a of each panel is now provided upon both sides, with suitable staples e. These staples are adapted to offer support and hold the shelves F, used in combination with the booth. Upon the top near each end the standards A are provided with two openings, h, adapted to hold the hooked ends of the curtaiued rods g which also assist inbracing the several sections.
It will be noticed that our invention comprises a series of similar panels, each provided with two hooks and two loops, which sections may be united to form a voting booth of any number of stalls. When the curtain is drawn,
thevoter is hidden and can so prepare his ballot.
The device is exceedingly simple, and the number of stalls used are only limited by the number of panels used.
