IVIANUFACTURE Oi: PLUG-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,550, dated January V30, V1894:. Application tiled February 4, 1 898. Serial No. 461,014. (No model.)
useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Plug-Tobacco; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to My invention relates to pressed plug tobacco manufactured by pressing it between die plates, and it consists, first, in a pressed plug of tobacco, preferably of rectangular form, having a frame-like or molding-like` portion on its broad surface, inside its outer edges and ends and about its central field portion, whereby a relatively depressed central field on which to place a printed label is secured, and said label is guarded and protected from injuryin the handling and from packing of the tobacco for shipment in cases; and also a relatively elevated frame-like outer eld portion is provided on which to prominently place any desired indice, as, for instance, the mannfacturers name and place of business, or an attractive symbolic label.
My invention consists, second, in a pressed plug `of tobacco, preferably of rectangular form, having a frame-like molding portion on either ot' its broad surfaces, inside its outer edges and ends, and about its central field, and raised guarding bead or beads on the said frame-like or molding-like portion, whereby a relatively depressed central field and an ele-A vated outer field for labels are provided, and the label or indice while prominently pre sented to the eye is guarded and protected from injury.
My invention also consists inapressed plug of tobacco havingaframe-like or molding portion-like on one of its broad surfaces outside its outer surfaces and ends and about its central eld portion; and also a relatively elevated frame-like outer field portion; andalso guarding beads on said latter eld portion, said plug havingimpressed cavities on its other side which match the elevated framelike, beaded portion; whereby the plugs `can concavities as h and b.
be packed closelyin contact with one another in shipping cases without injury to the labels and indices.
My invention will be fully understood from thefollowing specification, claims and aoco rnpanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bar of tobacco comprising three plugs manufactured in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the barl through one of the plugs. Fig. 3 is a broken enlarged section through one of the plugs, and Fig. 4 is a section illustrating the die plates used in manufacturing pressed plug tobacco in accordance with my invention. Figs. 5 and 6 are broken sectional views of a plug of tobacco illustrating slight modifications of my. invention.
formations ,respectively-7 comprise a frame-like border concavity a and one or two bead like If twobead-like concavities b and b are adopted theywill be formed at both the inner and Aouter edges of `the concavity a, but if only one bead-likeconcavity as b or b is adoptedsuch concavity will be either at the outeredge of the concavity a, as in Fig. 5, or at the inner edge of.
said concavity d, as in Fig. 6. `When the bead-like concavities are adopted, concavities e in form of alphabetical letters e arranged to spell out the manufacturers name and his place of business, or other indices, willbe formed in the die plates, and the die' plates will also be formed with transverse beads y and depressions 7c for forming ridges and depressions between the plugs of tobacco which form determined lines of separation of the plugs from the bar.
The border represented, has four sides, and
,its sides run oblique with respect to the edges of the plug; but it is obvious that any other appropriate geometrical form may be adopted without changing the principle of my invention.
The plug-tobacco in a properly softened state, is placed between the'die plates A,B, C, andthe die plates withy thetoba'cco between them are placed inthe press, and suffi- IDO cient pressure applied to produce upon the top surface of each plug the raised frame-like border portion c, see Fig. 1, beads d, d and alphabetical letters e', and impress upon the under surface concavities f, g, g of depths equal to the raised frame-like border portion c, beads d d and the alphabetical letters e. Thus the top field portion h and marginal portion i are formed on the same plane and below the frame-like border portion, and the bottom surface of the field portion and the margin portion are also on the same plane, while the concavities beneath the frame-like border and the bead portions are above the plane of the bottom surfaces of the central field and margin portions.
By forming the beads on the frame-like border portion, the eld for the alphabetical letters is below the tops of the beads, and thus the raised letters on said iield are guarded by the beads.
The central label field, and the ield of the border between the beads are veryimportant, as by the Iirst, ornamental labels designating the brand of the tobacco can be applied Within the frame-like border and, while protected from injury by said border, will show to the best advantage and add to the appearance of the tobacco; and on thelatter letters of the alphabet constructed upon the tobacco can be located, and thus located will be protected by the beads from injury, the frame-like border preventing the paper or other labels from being injured by rubbing upon one another, and the beads guarding the alphabetical letters or other indices, and the concavities on the under side of the plugs, allowing of the tobacco being closely and firmly packed, one plug upon another.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The within described improved article of manufacture, to wit,-pressed plug tobacco having on its top surface a fiat marginal p0rtion, a central field portion and a raised, frame-like border portion; the central eld portion and the marginal portions being on the same plane, and the said plug-tobacco having the surface of its marginal and field portions on the under side on the same plane and also made with an impressed, concavity beneath the frame-like border portion, substantially as described.
2. The within described improved article of manufacture, towit,-pressed plug tobacco, having on its top surface a fiat marginal portion, a central field portion and araised, border field portion having guarding bead or beads; and on its under side a concavity corresponding to the projecting framelike, beaded and indiced border portion, substantially as described.
3. The new article of manufacture, consisting of a pressed plug of tobacco constructed with aI-central, relatively depressed, field portion for the reception and support of a label, an outer, relatively elevated, field portion between the centraleld portion and the outer edges of the plug, a guarding bead and a flat surface extending from the last mentioned field portion to the edges of the plug, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
