JACOB DURST, OF RED LODGE, MONTANA.
STAMP OR ENVELOPE IVIOISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,488, dated January 30, 1894.
i Application led July 12,1893. Serial No. 480,266. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JACOB DURST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Lodge, 1n the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Stamp or Envelope Moistener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stamp and envelope moistener, and has for its object to provide a combined moistener, stamp-holder and pen-rack provided with means for guiding the stamps and facilitating their separation from each other.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l isa perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures of the drawings.
In the construction illustrated, l designates a supporting frame comprising the parallel side walls 2, having their front edges cutaway near the bottom to form the V-shaped notches 3, and connected together near their upper ends and at an intermediate point by the plates 4; and 5, respectively. Said plates are inclined downwardly toward their rear edges, and the plate 5 is extended forwardly beyond the front edges of the plates 2 to form a ledge 6, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The upper surface of this ledge is horizontal, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The side plates are provided, near their front edges, with registering bearings 7 and 8, in which are mounted respectively the lower and upper guide-rollers 9 and lO. The roller 9 is arranged close tothe surface of the plate 5, and the roller 10 is capable of a slight vertical adjustment limited by the length of the elongated bearings 8.
Between the lower ends of the side plates, with its bottom iush with the lower edges of the same, is a well 11, the upper edge of which is in the plane of the lower sides of the V- shaped notches 3, said edges being provided with bearings 12, in which is mounted the follows: The stamps are placed in the form of strips in the compartment 17, which is formed between the plates 4 and 5, with the terminal stamp of the strip projecting between the guide-rollers, as clearly shown in the drawings, the stamp being indicated at 1S. The iiap of the envelope is moistened in the ordinary way by passing the same over the absorbent roller, after which the portion of the face of the envelope which is to receive the stamp is similarly moistened, and such moistened surface is brought in contact with the gummed side of the projecting stamp. The envelope, with the attached stamp, is now drawn forwardly and carried downwardly until the front edge of the succeeding stamp aligns with the front edge of the ledge 6, when said stampsmay be separated upon the perforated connecting lineloy drawing the same over the edge of the ledge.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle orsacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what I claim isl. An envelope and stamp moistening apparatus comprising a well, an absorbent roller dipping beneath the surface of the water contained in said well, a stamp compartment, guide-rollers located at the front of said compartment, and a ledge projecting beyond the guide-rollers to separate the stamps, substantially as specified.
2. An envelope and stamp moistening apparatus having side walls provided at their upper edges with aligning notches and at their lower front edges with cutaway portions forming V-shaped notches, a well arranged between the lower ends of the side plates with its upper edge iush with the lower sides of ICO said V-shaped notches, a moistening roller having its spindle mounted in bearings in the lower sides of thev V-shaped notches, parallel partitions disposed between the side plates respectively adjacent to the upper ends and at an intermediate point thereof to form an intervening stamp chamber or compartment, guide-rollers mountedin registering bearings in the side-plates at the front end of the stamp 1o chamber or compartment, and a ledge 6 arranged below and projecting in front of the guide-rollers, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claiin'the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BURST.
Witnesses:
W. F. MEYER, JOHN STEVENS.
