APPARATUS FOR TRIMMING STERECTYPE-BLOCKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,330, dated January 23, 1894.

Be it known that I, ALBERT KAYSER,aCitizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Trimming Stereotype-Blocks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and

, is securely held in the apparatus, whereby its back may be trimmed to reduce it to typehigh, and whereby also its edges and ends may be trimmed, thereby providing for trimming the block all around.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus, showing it in working position to reduce the block type high. Fig. 2 is aview showing it reversed for the trimming ofi the sides and ends of the block.

A is the frame or stock of the apparatus. It is provided with a longitudinal bed or channel a bounded by side walls a, the tops of which are formed with rabbets a".

B is a holder for the trimming file. It is provided with side rabbetsb which accurately fit the rabbets at of the side Walls, thereby enabling the file-holder to be moved back and .forth in, the frame or stock. To effect this movement conveniently, the fileholder is provided with a handle 0.

D is the file which is properly secured in the under side of the file-holder. The height of the rabbets a forming the bearing on which the file-holder is moved back and forth, is accurately regulated to cause the file to lie just type-high above the base of the bed or channel in thestock. The stereotype block F is firmly secured in position within the galley by any suitable means, as, for example, by means of the quoins G which firmly lock it in place. Now, when the galley, with its locked block F, is slipped into the stock, so that the block lies in the channel thereof, the reciprocation of the file over the back of the blockwill reduce it to typehigh.

In order to provide for trimming the sides and edges of the block, I make on the under side of one side of the stockA groove a Upon one edge of the file-holder is formed a tongue I) which fits into said groove a The bottom of the stock is also provided with end blocks a which, whenthe stock is right side up, serve as supports or legs, but which, when the stock is inverted, will serve as stops against which the stereotype block may be fitted and held while the file is reciprocated against its side or edge thereby trimming these surfaces. This use of the apparatus I have shown in Fig. 2.

This apparatus is intended for use in ordinary printing oifices wherein it is often necessary in order to use a stereotype block to trim it slightly. These blocks, becoming wet, swell, and must be reduced to type -hi gh, and frequently their edges have also to be trimmed.

This apparatus can readily be manipulated and is inexpensive enough to be used in any office. V

blocks, consisting of a reversible stock having a bed in which the stereotype block is socured, and a detachable and movableholder and file secured thereto, mounted in the top of the stock in such position that the file will come in contact with the stereotype block, and redzucezit tothe proper thicknesslor type.- high, substantially as herein described.

An apparatus. for trimming stereotype blocks consisting of astock having a-channel or bed with side openings communicating therewith and side walls in which saidopenings are formed, a sliding holder with attached file operating in: the; top 0tv the walls of the'stock, and a. box: or frame adapted to carry the-stereotype block and to. pass. transiversely through the side openings of the channel or bedof the stock whereby the block is held therein under the reciprocating file and is reduced type-high, substantially as herein described.

An apparatus for trimming stereotype blocks, consisting of a reversible stock having upon one side a groove, a detachable holder having a tongue, fitting the groove of the stock, a file carriedby said holder and adapted to trim the edges of the stereotype I block supported upon the stock, and stops on said stock against which the block may be held, substantially as herein described.
