UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT EPSTEIN, OF BRESLAU, GERMANY.
FOLDING FOOT-BENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,311, dated January 23, 1894.
. Serial Ilo-470,687. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALBERT EPsTnIN, a subject of thel King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Breslau, in the Province of Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia, Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Folding Traveling Foot-Bench, of which J'he following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- My invention relates to a folding foot-bench, and has for its object to so construct the bench that it may be folded into a Very compact form, and in the folded state the exterior surfaces of the bench will be substantially smooth.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully disclosed hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the bench in position for use. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bench, with the legs removed. Fig. 3 shows two of the legs inserted the one into the other; and Fig. 4. is a cross section of the bench in its folded position.
In carrying out my invention as illustrated by the drawings, I construct the bench of a board made in two hinged sections o. h, and detachable legs g adapted to be inserted with their upper ends into holes f provided on the under side of the board a b. The sections a b are connected by means of two lateral hinges c c and of a central hinge d, and I prefer to so construct the said hinges that the sections of the board a b can be folded in one direction only, as Will be seen in Fig. 1. The nnder side of the board, which is the inner side when the bench isin its folded position (Fig. 4), is provided with four recesses e, which are adapted to receive the detachable legs g. I prefer to make these legs partially hollow, so that one of them can be slid into the other, as will be seen in Figs. 3 and 4.. The upper tapering end of the legs may be slotted, as shown at g', (Fig. 3) in order to impart a certain degree of elasticity to the said ends and to make them fit more tightly into the holesj'. 5o
It will be obvious that the weight of the bench will be very slight, and this can be further reduced by making the metallic parts of aluminum or any other light metal.
A suitable locking device, such as a hook h, adapted to engage with a pin (Figs. 1, 2 and 4), can be provided for holding the bench in its closed position.
It will be obvious that other articles of furniture, such as stools or tables, can be constructed in substantially the same manner as above described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A folding article of furniture, comprising a board composed of hinged sections, and detachable tapered legs capable of being slid the one into the other, the board being pro- 'vided on its under side with means for securing the upper ends of the legs, and further with tapered leg-receivin g recesses adapted to register with one another and entirely inclose the legs in the folded position, substantially as described.
2. A folding article of furniture, comprising a board composed of hinged sections, and detachable tapered legs partly hollow and slotted at their` upper ends, and capable of being slid the one into the other, the board 8o being provided on its under side with holes to receive the upper ends of the legs, and further with tapered leg-receivin g recesses adapted to register with one another and entirely inclose the legs in the folded position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT EPSTEIN.
