To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRASER SANDEMAN, gentleman,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of 20 St. Swithins Lane,

London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Photographers Bath and Printing-Frame, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 903, for the period of fourteen years from J anuary 16, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined photographers bath and printing frame.

The object of my invention is to construct a device which will combine in itself a bath and printing frame, and which will, by reason of this combination, save labor and time in handling and have otheradvantages as hereinafter described. I accomplish this object by the means hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line a z of Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a similar view to Fig. 8 except that the backing is removed. Fig. 5 is a rear view similar to Fig. 2 with backing removed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a frame constructed of vulcanite, porcelain, or other suitable material. This frame is constructed with a rectangular ledge 2 on which rests a rubber gasket 3. The negative at is utilized as the bottom of the bath and is placed against said gasket and held in place by spring cross bars 5 having their ends engaging with proper grooves or recesses provided on the rear parts of frame 1 or other suitable means. The bath is thus made perfectly water tight and has the advantage of forming a complete photographic bath with a transparent bottom thereto, enabling the negative to remain in the bath until fully developed, and, being easily moved about by means of the frame without risk of breakage, the condition and state thereof from time to time can be easily ascertained by running the chemicals into the trough or groove hereinafter described and holding the bath up to the light.

The trough 6 is formed in one side of the frame as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 by gouging or cutting out the substance of the material thereof, or it may be formed in the molding or casting or in any other approved manner. The operator is also enabled to wash the negative without removing it from the frame or touching it in any way.

To use the device as a printing frame the negative is reversed on the rubber gasket 3, the sensitized paper placed in position, the back 7 placed on the paper and the spring bars 5 adjusted to hold the back down. Such back is shown to be made in two sections, hinged together so as to offer when unfolded a perfectly smooth and even surface against which the sensitized paper may be placed. The back is so placed in connection with. the frame as to bring the joints between the spring cross bars 5, 5. Making such back in two sections hinged together as described permits of easier manipulation of the apparatus and of first placing and confining one section of back b in contact with such paper by means of one of the spring cross bars 5, and then completing the contact by means of the other bar being made to press against the other half of such back.

I prefer to place springs in direct contact with the detachable back and to support said springs on both sides of the frame so as to apply their pressure to the back centrally, as shown. I thus transfer such spring pressure to the edges of the back where they rest upon that part of the negative inserted between the rubber gasket and such back, and thereby reduce to a minimum the danger of leakage from the frame.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
