DEVICE FOR HOLDING NIPPLES DURING THREADING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,147, dated January 23,1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain newand tion for Letters Patent of the United States,
Serial No. 443,397, filed August 18, 1892. In this application Ishowed and described a disk or plate swiveled to the front end of the spindle, against which disk or plate the inner end of the nipple abutted. I have ascertained, however, that, when the threads of the nipple holder and spindle are both of the same nature (0;. e.- both right handed or both left handed), no matter how firmly the disk was 1 driven against the nipple prior to the operation of threading, when such operation commenced, the grip of the threading dies on the end of the nipplewas, in many instances, sufficient to revolve the disk and back the spindle, owing to the fact that such nipple, disk and spindle would revolve together in harmony for the reason that they were tightly bound together. Therefore, it will be clearly understood, that in my former invention, the threads of the nipple holder and spindle must be of opposite natures in order to render the device successful in its operation, and that accordingly, such device was capable of use only for cutting one kind of thread on the nipples. In other words, if right and left handed nipples were required, two machines would have to be used. 7
The object of my present invention is to obtain the benefit attaching to a swiveled disk .on the end of the spindle, and at the same time to obviate the above noted disadvantages, and with these ends in view my invention consists in providing a swiveled disk or plate on the inner end of the spindle, and in Serial No. 471,151. (No model.)

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a nipple holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the disk being secured as against rotation by means of lugs which extend from the periphery of the disk within elongated ways in the casing; Fig. 2, a section at the line x;r.of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. 1, but
showing the disk provided with a square hub which extends within a corresponding recess in the casing, whereby such disk is held against rotation,and Fig. 4:, a section at the line yy of Fig. 3.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of drawings.
In this application I will not describe in detail the construction and adaptation of the nipple holder, nor the manner of placing the nipple in proper position, since my present invention has nothing to do with these matters and moreover they are precisely the same in all respects as in my aforesaid pending application.

This disk is necessarily of such diam- I eter that it extends wholly across the end of the nipple,so that the latter will abut squarely the disk is prevented by a square hub 11 which extends rearwardly from the disk within a correspondingly shaped recess 12 in the casing.
In Fig. 1 the nipple holder is shown as socured inside the forward end of the casing,
whereas in Fig. 3, such holder is secured around the outside of said end. In this latter instance, as shown and described in my pending application, the disk is notched at 13 to permit of the passage of the lugs 5 within the gates 6. When the disk is left free to turn axially, these notches 13 will get out of alignment with the gates 6, and thereby interfere with the ready securing and removal of the nipple holder. In my present improvement these notches and gates are in alignment at all times owing to the fact that the disk is stationary as to rotatory movement.
My invention widely differs from the devices for holding nipples, which devices have angular grasping cutting edges which are wedged within the nipple so as to cut into the same to prevent it from rotating, and I wish to be understood as disclaimin g any such construction, it being imperative in my device that the end of the nipple should abut squarely against the disk. In this connection I will say that it is awell established fact that any attempt to hold the nipple during threading by wedging grasping edges against the interior of the nipple will result in either reaming out the nipple or in cutting jagging edges therein.
This invention has no especial connection with any specific construction of nipple holder,
and it is immaterial how such holder is secured into position, the gist of my invention resting in the broad idea of providing a swiveled relaxable abutment for the nipples, such abutment being stationary as to axial movement.
I claim- 1. In a device for holding nipples preparatory to final threading, the combination of the casing, the nipple holder detachably secured to the end thereof and incapable of rotary or longitudinal motion, the spindle having a thread adapted to engage with a corresponding thread in said casing. and a relaxable abutment swiveled to the end of said spindle and stationary as to axial movement and having a diameter greater than the outside diameter of the nipples, substantially as set forth;
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of the casing and the abutment disk rigidly secured together as to rotation, the nipple holder secured to the end of said casing and incapable of rotation or 1ongitudinal movement, and the operating spindle having a thread adapted to engage with a corresponding thread in the casing and swiveled to said disk, the latter having a diameter greater than the outside diameter of the nipple to be threaded, substantially as set forth.
