SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent N0. 513,066, dated January 16, 1894. Application led April 7, 1893. Serial No. 469,378. (No'model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NIELs MELOHIOR AN- DERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Adj usting Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin they art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadl to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked itzhereon, which form a part of thisl specifica- My invention relates to `certain new and useful improvements in means for adjusting electric lamps, and has for its object to provide `mechanism whereby 'the lheight of the lamp may be regulatedat will.

To this end my invention consistsin the novel arrangement and constructionof parts hereinafter described and afterward delimitely pointed out in the claim, ydue reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, represents a side elevation of my improved device, a portion of the frame being broken away; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same illustrating the spring; Fig. 3, the vertical central sectiontaken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2.

Referring to thedrawings, the letter A, indicates a loop or frame within which is journaled a pulley B, rigidly affixed, to a shaft C. Upon one side of said pulley are pivoted pawls D, which are adapted to engage recesses d in a hub E rigidly secured upon the shaft C. Secured to the same face of the pul- L lley are'lugs or projections F, which limit the outward movement of the pawls D. The pulley B is constructed hollow and has secured to one of its interior faces a spring Gr, the other end of which is secured to the shaft E. The cord H is woundabout said pulley and carries at its lower end a handle I, said cord passing through a guard loop J formed upon the bottom of the loop or casing A. It thence passes through a clamp K and at its free end has attached the handle before referred to. Y The clamp K preferably consists of two pieces of metal perforated and screw-threaded at one end whereby they may be united by means of a set screw la, their opposite ends diver-ging in such manner as to form a loop through which the electric'light wire mayv passing through the clamp as before described. f

The operation of my device is as follows: The frame A is secured to the ceiling or the line wire, whichever may be desired, and the line wire is dropped to a suitable height carrying at its free end an electric lamp; by pulling upon the handle I the cord is unwound from the pulley B, thus lowering the lamppto the positionv desired. If it be desired to raise the lamp it is only necessary to give a short `pull upon the cord and push the lamp upward, when the centrifugal force exerted by the revolution of the pulley will keep out of engagement the pawls until the pulley has been arrested by hand. 4The upward nieve-v ment of the cord is then arrested.
