To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH GERBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved machine for shaving tapers on the ends of heel counters, straps, or belts, and other analogous uses, and its object is to provide said machine with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, with portions broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2 a plan view of the same and Fig. 3 a rear elevation of the cutter arm and a portion of the bed.

A is the bench or table upon which the machine is supported.

The bed of the machine consists of a heavy metal bed plate, having an elevated portion B, and a lower portion B, at the junction of which portions is a curved track 0, having its surface in a slightly inclined plane to correspond to the average taper to be cut on the stock, and its concave side vertical and concentric to the axis of the pivot post N. Said concave side is also provided with a groove 0, parallel to the upper surface of said track; said post is journaled in the bed B, with its axis perpendicular to the plane of the upper surface of the track 0. An arm 0 is hinged to the post N to turn in the plane of the axis of said post. Said arm extends radially across the track (J, and terminates in a handle P,

' and is also provided with an extension Q arranged at an angle to the radial line of said arm and has a knife U attached by bolts V V to its lower side, which knife traverses over an adjustable plate D inserted in a suitable recess in the bed B, and held in place by a stud E, passing through said bed and provided with a suitable nut and washer. The inclination of the plate D is determined by set screws F, passing through the bed B into said recess and engaging the under side of said plate. Attached to the extension Q, and slightly in advance of the knife U and in line therewith is the presser bar R, having upwardly projecting studs S S, which pass through the extension Q, and are provided with nuts to adjust and'limit the downward movement of said bar; said bar is forced downward against the stock by springs T surrounding the studs S S, and inclosed in suitable chambers in the extension Q. To hold the arm 0 down in contact with the track 0, a block having a tongue 0 engaging and traversing the groove 0, is secured by screws V to the under side of the arm 0. A strip of rubber belting G, or other suitable material is inserted in the bed B, upon which is clamped the stock to be shaved, by means of the spring clamping bar H, having a roughened under surface opposite said strip G, and secured to an arm I, on the bed B, by a bolt J. Said clam pis depressed by abolt K, which passes through the same and the bed B, and also through a lever L on the under side of said bed, which lever at its movable end is connected by a rod M, to any suitable treadle on the floor.

The heel counter, strap, belt, or other article to be tapered at the end, is placed with such end upon the plate D, and clamped by depressing the bar H. By grasping the handle P, and swinging the bar 0 about the axis of the post N, the pressure bar R will traverse and hold the stock down on the bed G, the springs T T, yielding to accommodate the various thickness of said stock. The knife Ufollowiug said presser bar, takes off all of the stock above the plane of its movement, leaving a true tapered end, of such angle as may be determined by adjusting the plate D. By adjusting one end of the knife in advance of the other, it is found to cut easier and smoother.

For sharpening or detaching the knife, the arm 0 may be swung clear of the track 0, and then turned upon its hinge to a vertical position, or inverted as most convenient. It

is evidently immaterial whether the track 0 and post N are inclined, and the bed B horizontal or vice-versa. What I claim is- 5 1. In a shaving machine, a bed plate, a curved track having an inclined plane upper side, and a concave vertical side having a groove, a post journaled in the axis of said curved side, an arm attached to said post and traversing the upper side surface of said track, a tongue on said arm traversing said groove, an extension on said arm having a knife and a spring actuated presser bar attached, a bed plate traversed by said knife and bar, and a clamp for holding the stock, substantially as described.

In a shaving machine, an arm pivoted at one end, and traversing an are at the other end, a knife attached to the traversing end of said arm, and bar parallel to, and in front of said knife, studs on said bar extending upward through said arm, adjusting nuts and springs on said studs, a bed plate adj ustably inclined to the plane of'movement of said knife, and traversed by the same, and a holding clamp adjacent to said plate, substantially as described.

In a shaving machine, a bed having an elevated portion, and a depressed portion connected by an inclined curved track, having a groove in its concave side, a post journaled in said bed, with its axis vertical to the plane of said track, an arm hinged to said post having a tongue engaging and traversing said groove, a handle and an extension on said arm, a knife attached to the lower side of said extension, a bar parallel to said knife, having studs passing. through said extension, adjusting nuts and springs on said studs, an adjustable bed traversed by said knife, and a spring clamping bar connected to a lever beneath said bed, substantially as described.

with a bed and clamp to hold the stock, of an arm, movable in a curved line across said bed, said arm having an extension from it arranged at an angle to its radial line, and a knife, secured to said extension and movable with said arm, said knife thereby traversing the bed in a curved line, substantially as described.
