FURNITURE GASTER.
No. 512,920. Patented Jan. 16,1894.
WITNESSEE. y INVENTR. 'QWM UNITED STATES ATENT EEICE y JAMES R. SUTLIFF, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOSTER, MERRIAM da COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FuRNiTuRE-CAsT/ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,920, dated January 16, 1894.
Application tiled June 12, 1893. Serial No. 477,280- (NO modem To all whom it may concer-n,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. SUTLIEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furniture Casters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin ga part of this speciflcation, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a caster in which the horn supporting the caster roll is provided with an anti-friction connection with the remainder of the caster, and as against both vertical and lateral pressures upon it. This result is obtained by the construction represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and hereinafter explained.
In the drawings,-Figure l is a view in perspective of the parts of the caster which constitutes my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the same, also showing the caster roll, and Fig. 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section.
A represents the caster roll. It is carried, in the usual manner, by the horns a which depend from a circular plate a. This plate has upon its Lipper surface the ilat section a2 surrounding a cylindrical section or wall a3, and this wall, in turn, incloses or surrounds a large opening a4. The wall or cylindrical section a is arranged to enter the cavity of an upper plate B, this upper plate having a wall b extending downwardly from its outer edge, a central hole b and a flat bearing surface b2 which surrounds the hole and is within the short wall b3. The wall a3 is enough smaller in diameter than the wall b to provide an annular space c for holding anti-friction rolls C, the rolls bearing against the flat surface a2 of the lower plate and the under surface of the upper plate adjacent to the wall. This provides an anti-friction construction as against a downward or vertical strain or pressure. The friction of lateral pressure is decreased by means of a roll D which fits within the recess formed by the wall b3 of the upper plate and projects into the hole a4 of the lower plate, and this roll is held in posi- 5o t-ion by the head e of the spindle E, or by a washer held against its lower end by the head of the spindle, the spindle passing through a hole in this vertical roll and through the hole b in the upper plate; and the upper plate is 53' secured in place upon the spindle by a flange e formed integral with the spindle and fitting an enlarged section of the hole b', or said flange may be separately formed and secu red to the spindle to hold said plate in position 6o thereon, in any desired way.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The improved caster comprising the horn plate carrying the roll A and having the wall a3, lat section a2 and central hole a4, the upper plate having the outer wall b, inner short wall b3 and central opening h tapering outwardly toward the upper surface of the plate, 7o the rolls C loosely mounted on edge on at section a2 and between the walls a3 and b, the spindle E having flange e fitting the tapering portion of the opening b', the roll D fitted on the spindle and extending into or through the hole a4 of the lower plate, and a washer on the lower end of the spindle to retain the parts in position, the said spindle being headed to retain the washer in position, substantially as described.
