Description

(No'ModeL) F. s. HILLH'OUSE. POCKET GUIDE AND COMPASS.
Patented Jan. 16, 1894.
WITNESSES INVENTOE? \Q @Mm. MM
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. HILLHOUSE, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
POCKET GUIDE AND COMPASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,882, dated January 16, 1894.
Application filed March 2, 1393.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK S. I-IILLHoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pocket Guide and Compass, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a new article of manufacture, in which are combined a number of features in a convenient manner for carrying and for reference, all of especial use to the tourist.
To this end the invention in general consists of a folding book-like cover, containing a compass, blank and printed leaves, a map, and if desired a slated surface.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is aperspective view, showing the guide open; and Fig. 2 is an edge view, showing the guide closed.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is a cover, made to open and close like a book cover. On the inside of one of the covers and at one end thereof, is a compass, B, fitted into a pocket in the raised portion, 0. Of course the raised portion 0 may be dispensed with, but it has a use, however, below described. Below the compass is a surface, D, upon which dates and memoranda can be temporarily entered by the tourist,
which surface for convenience of description we will call a slate, meaning thereby that any slated surface or its equivalent may be employed for temporary use.
At E are blank and printed pages, the printed matter, for instance, consisting of information in relation to routes, points of interest, time tables, directories, &c., and the blank pages being for the use of the tourist in making a record of any matter which he may desire, more especially a permanent record. The guide may be made, however, without the blank pages.
The cover also contains a map, F, of any particular locality or country to which the guide relates'in given instances, such, for an illustration, as the Worlds Fair grounds at Chicago. This map is preferably made so as 'to fold in the space between the covers below the raised portion, 0, which contains the compass, and the printed and blank pages are Serial No. 464,309. (No model.)
States, localities and even countries, as the v case may be, so that tourists can avail themselves of whichever they may desire.
While the slated surface D, referred to, is deemed especially important for temporary entries, still it may be dispensed with.
Such a pocket guide, containing these necessary and relative features in a compact and handy form, will not only befound convenient to the tourist when traveling, but will constitute an interesting souvenir for preserving afterward and more especially if permanent records have been made of matters of especial interest during the trip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pocket guide and compass comprising a folding cover, a raised portion on the inside of one of the covers, a compass fixed in said raised portion, and printed and blank pages and a map in the space between the covers not occupied by said raised portion; substantially as set forth.
2. As a newarticle of manufacture, a pocket guide and compass comprising a folding cover, a raised portion on the inside of one of the covers, a compass fixed in said raised portion, and a slated surface, printed and blank pages and a map in the space between the covers not occupied by said raised portion; substantially as set forth.
In testimony to the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my namein the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK S. HILLHOUSE.
