SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,720, dated January 16, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK KRUPICKA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milligan, in the countyof Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to. make and use the same.

This invention relates to wire reels adapted to be employed for reeling wire and transferring it from one position to another, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means whereby a farmerior other person can readily take down a fence composed of wire and transfer it to another position for the purpose of inclosing another part of his land.

With this end in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. s

Referring to the drawings: the numerals 1 and 2 designate a pair'of parallel bars that are connected at one end by a cross-bar 3,

having a slot 4-therein, and between the said cross-bar 3 and the ends of the'bars 1 and 2, are mounted vertically disposed. uprights 5, connected at their upper ends by a cross-strip orbrace 6, and having inclined braces 7 extending down from one side thereof to the said bars 1 and 2.

The bars 1 and 2 are mounted upon an axle 8, which is supplied with a pair of wheels 9, one of which is preferably formed with traction ribs 10, and inside of the same is a sprocketwheel 11, which is encircled by a chain 12 running to a smaller sprocketwheel 13, mounted on the outer end of a short shaft 15, having bearing in the bar 2, the inner end of said short shaft 15, having keyed thereon a larger sprocket-Wheel 16. g

The bars 1 and 2 are formed with handles 17, by which the machine may be impelled over the ground, .or, if it is so desired, the said bars may be converted into suitable thills or shafts for the purpose of hitching u'panimals thereto. 1

On the upper side of the cross-bar 3 .is mounted a roller 18, which plays in the slot lower head 19 having a pair-of parallel guideposts 20 rising from opposite sides thereof to centralize the wire being fed to the machine and wound thereon. The wire plays over the roller 18 in either its inward or outward movement, and passes between the said guideposts 20.

In the inclined braces 7 is journaled a shaft 21 at a suitable elevation, and thereon is loosely mounted a sprocket-wheel 22, over which passes a chain-belt 23 also surrounding the sprocket-wheel 16. The sprocket wheel 22 is supplied with a drum 22', extending inwardly therefrom. A reel 24 is also loosely mounted on the said shaft 21, and at the op posite ends or heads thereof is arranged a series of right-angular arms 25, the said reel being in line with the roller 18, and the guide- "posts 20. On the shaft 21 is rigidly keyed a the latter in connection therewith. To the said clutch-bar 26 is adjustably secured a pair of clutch-arms 27 having their central portions bowed outwardly and supplied with hearing shoes 28 adapted to engage the drum of. the sprocket-wheel 23. v The said clutcharms have their upper ends pivotally attached to the said clutch-bar, and their lower ends are not secured to the said clutch-bar, but are adj ustably connected to each other by a clamping screw and nut 28*, with which is employed a tension spring 29, to sustain the proper degree of'adjustment, but still permit of a slight yielding movement to counteract the effect of shocks and jars.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the clutch-arms are clamped to the drum 21101 the sprocket-wheel 23, and the clutch-bar 26is secured to the arm of the such a nature that when the machine is im pelled forwardly the wire will be taken up and the operator can readily observe the full operation of the machine, and at the same time see that the wire is properly wound upon the reel. If it is desired to rapidly unwind the wire from the reel, the clutch-arms are released from frictional contact with the wheel 23, and the arms 25 of the reel 24 disconnected from the clutch-bar 26, thereby causing the reel to operate freely to unwind the wire.

It will be understood that many minor changes in the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described, so long as they are within the scope of the invention, without departing from the nature or spirit of the same.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a wire reel the combination of a shaft,a reel loosely mounted thereon having arms at the ends thereof, a clutch bar rigidly keyed to said shaft havinga pair of bowed arms pivoted thereto at their upper ends and adapted to be adjusted at their lower ends, said clutch bar having a locking catch or link adapted to engage one of the arms of the reel, a sprocket wheel having a drum to be engaged by the said clutch arm, and means for rotating said sprocket wheel, substantially as described.
